eventually, i want to switch to local-only media. i am slowly moving in that direction - i finally managed to settle on a few technology choices that i feel committed to.

tailscale makes it easy to avoid all of that - i install it on my phone, on all of my servers, and never worry about network accessibility again. i can move apartments, houses, distribute my devices - it's all handled transparently.

i used to install openbsd on routes & route w/ pf - separate rack-mounted switch, separate blah blah blah. absolute waste of time.

i've also settled on just having an openwrt router + several small computers in various rooms - some hardwired, some connected via wifi.

given all of this, i'm pretty close to setting up a storage server of some kind -- i want to move especially my music offline.

in the meantime, i do use a streaming service - but i managed to stop using spotify by adopting tidal.

tidal is miles better at recommending real, good, non-AI music. spotify's discover playlists always, always reek of "let's play the songs that cost us the least money" - i'm near certain some of them were auto-generated by spotify.

from a $$$ point of view, it would make a lot of sense to produce infinite amounts of AI music & plug that stuff into automatic playlists.

anyways, does anyone have any recs for local music streaming? ideally something that feels good to use, and doesn't feel like a oracle UI from 2007

@jes! easy to setup: yes
quick to setup? extremely
easy to use: yes (for my tastes)
looks good: depends on your tastes, probably not?

(I've given access to my media files to a lightweight web server, and just open them / the playlists with a browser)
