Is there any way to block or muffle the Mic on modern cell phones? Something like the equivalent of throwing tape or a post-it over cameras.

I know you can put things in faraday bags, but then you can’t use them at all. You used to be able to fool them with a cut-off headphone cord, but no more.

This seems like a question the Fediverse would enjoy thinking about.

Do you mean the mic?

I imagine you could put tape over it. I would expect there to be a couple of holes along the bottom edge of the phone, and I would assume one of those is the mic.

Assume you mean mic, not pic?

If so, I've no idea. But at least the post now makes sense (to me).

🙂

@Bomkatt there are phones with a switch that disconnect the mic, but afaik they are all niche products

I suspect that tape over the holes would muffle it a bit, but not completely prevent it from recording intelligible audio.

@valhalla I’m contemplating hacking together some kind of “earmuffs” you could pop on. Like when you cover a child’s ears

You could try putting a cotton ball in front of the microphones and taping that over, but that's going to get tape adhesive on your phone and (probably) gum up the works.

You could turn your phone off (best) or reboot it, but not log in (on iOS you'll have to enter your passcode/phrase).

You can also go into Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and restrict what applications have microphone access.

Settings → Accessibility → Siri and turn off "Always listen for “Hey Siri”

@WTL I do know about limiting mic access, but I was being grouchy and thinking about how we just have to trust the OS to do what we tell it to.

Sometimes, I miss having physical things to manipulate.

@WTL
I've restricted what apps have access to my voice and I always keep Siri off, even though it would be convenient for a lot of things. I have to restrict access for Discord because it ALWAYS turns on the mic on my phone when I sign into a chat on my computer!

@WTL
And when I went to check, my mic is definitely turned off for Discord on my phone. How annoying! It really is working well for me to do online joint watches and text chats for k-drama as well as an online international #korean conversation club. Not sure if there's another way to prevent it from turning on my phone mic.

🤔 …put phone down, walk out of building, and retreat into the forest for the rest of time?

I can get behind that.
