Book club book is a Terry Pratchett book and it's my third attempt at a Discworld book, I want to like them! And I just can't find any enjoyment of it this time either. What's wrong with me?

Aw, sometimes things just don't click, and that's OK.

Out of curiosity which ones have you read?

in reply to eclectech

@eclectech none, because I can't get more than three chapters in 😅 The book circle book I am fighting with is Guards! Guards!, last attempt was Colour of Magic, and I forget what the two previous failures were named, too long ago. I like the concept but...

Haha, maybe it's just not for you. It happens.

FWIW worth I like Guards Guards, but mainly for what comes after (the characters go on to better books I feel). Colour of Magic is one to go back to if you get grabbed by the world, but not one of the best.

Personally the person I introduced successfully to the Discworld started with Mort, which I LOVE and which also worked for them, but not at all suggesting you should try again if you don't fancy it! It's fine to not like something 😁

@StarSloth @eclectech not getting into Colour of Magic is perfectly normal, it's not the best.

Not enjoying Guards! Guards! probably means that it's not the right author for you? that's also fine

(you are wrong, but you have *every right* to be wrong on this! :D )

in reply to StarSloth

Which book is it?

The earlier stuff is much more fantasy trope-y, so you might have better luck with the later books.

If I should choose one, it'd be Thud!.

@pilum I don't find them funny, is the problem, I think. And the imagery falls flat when applied to my Serious Brain, in that mode it's hard to see any depth to it. I might just be incompatible with things meant to be funny. Parodies aren't funny either.
in reply to StarSloth

I enjoy them (partly rooted in getting into them in my teens when I was almost the perfect target audience), but I can really understand why people wouldn't:
they're at times very obviously trying to drive home a point, while also being of Very British Authorship (so while Terry's willing to evolve and be inclusive (and he does get better throughout the series), he's got a _lot_ of Empire Thinking running around his mind).

@LeoR1010 Jag läste en av henne också och kände typ inget, så gav bort den. Har glömt vad den heter. Känns som om många av de stora är stora för att de träffar bra hos en viss åldersgrupp och sen lever på nostalgi?
in reply to StarSloth

Oh thank you, it's not just me. >.<

So many "must-read" authors/book series just never click for me. Discworld is one of them 😞

in reply to StarSloth

Not everything is for everyone, especially when it comes to humor. Nothing wrong with that at all. Maybe it's the plot/subject not connecting?

I've been slowly making my way through Discworld for years barely making any progress but it's more a me problem since I haven't read a lot of fiction for various reasons. Plus, I only have them in eBook form and I always have more problems reading those consistently compared to physical books.

Equal Rites is one of my favorites.

it's not just you, I have this same issue! I see the community created around him and his books and it's so amazing. I want so very much to like what I've read and while they are fine they just don't grab me in any way. I've tried several books on the advice of lots of people and even read them all the way through. I feel sad and yes, like there's something wrong with me. :(

@Bikil I love the description of the plots and the world and the message, I just am not grabbed by the actual writing. And most authors have readers that land in a scale from amazing through meh whatever to hate it, but not here, it seems to only be superfans. That makes it difficult to exist as a meh whatever and not feel like outgroup. We're supposed to like this and be part of the tribe! I don't want to die alone in the jungle! Stupid reflexes our brains have affecting even books.
