The Holdovers? Someone (a guy) put it in their favourite top ten from the last few years, as a movie to rewatch around Christmas time. I haven't seen it yet, but the characters were described as having layers which goes a long way to interesting me to watch it. On Netflix.
Wow, okay... it sounds like a movie I'd like, but from a review, I don't know if it'll put me in a holiday mood. People working through trauma probably isn't the right vibe. I'll watch it, but I'm going to need something more up-beat, too.
All the extended family Christmas events is what made it feel like Christmas to me, and now that I've lost all of that, I need some outside source. Listening to Christmas music, watching a Christmas movie.
Sounds like a great plan. I like to add things like drinking hot chocolate/mulled wine to the list, your mileage likely varies. But I'm the person who feels like it's Christmas when I smell a candle getting extinguished plus someone peeling a satsuma. Even in hot summer, it's such an evocative combo to me. I also like to put up a few Xmas decs, like a wreath on the wall and attaching a few pretty items to a wooden clothes hanger. Coz I can't be bothered with putting lots away after.
I watched The Holdovers last night so you don't have to. I liked it a lot and it will stick with me, but it's not a Christmas movie. It's just set at Christmas time. I wouldn't add it to my top ten (except perhaps to Films released that year), but I did enjoy it a lot. The performances were great, characters layered, interesting story but it didn't have that much oomph overall. I didn't find it too depressing but perhaps the stories didn't resonate hugely with me. Maybe that's it.
