Yes, he has worked mostly in Peru. He chose Leo as his papal name, continuing on Leo the 13th who was known for his social justice perspectives at the turn of the last century. E.g. he suggested that all workers should be able to strike. Seems like someone that could me more of a contrast to Trump if one can speculate. I don't know more than this!
It's the first time that there's an American pope, so it is open for interpretation for most people I think. I just note that he linguistically represented the places he has lived (incl. many years in Rom, right next to the balcony he was standing, as the head of the Augustinians), but not USA.That tells me he is more of a Peruvian, than an American pope.
"Despite the Vatican’s longstanding opposition to the idea of a pope from the US because of the country’s superpower status and secular global influence, the moderate, Chicago-born Prevost is still one to watch. Created a cardinal by Francis in 2023, the former leader of the Augustinian order was also appointed by the late pope to the powerful Dicastery for Bishops, which oversees the selection of new bishops from around the world. Those senior roles, combined with the fact that he has significant missionary experience in Peru, having served as bishop of the northern city of Chiclayo, may go some way to redeeming him in the eyes of those who would not usually countenance the idea of an American pope."

He's been in Peru a while doing missionary work. I'm a very lapsed Catholic, but this strikes me as someone who could influence US Catholics against a bad secular influence. To use SAT analogy terms:
John Paul II : Soviet-Communism :: Leo XIV : US MAGA-ism
@Madeleine Morris what I'm reading on some Italian press is that he's probably a compromise, in line with Francis on migrants, the global South and the climate crisis, but more conservative on women and lgbt+ people.
It's a shame that most self-described christian people in power (and their supporters) are probably going to ignore him as usual on the former, and only listen on the latter.

in reply to Madeleine Morris • • •Anyone know anything about this guy? He was chosen by Francis, so maybe more of a liberal?
But he’s an American - so maybe a Trumper?
But he served a long time in South America, so maybe not too bad?
I guess we’ll find out.

in reply to Madeleine Morris • • •Early reports are he's a centrist who leans progressive, even toward being a socialist.
We'll see.
