what‘s a hot water bottle? A vacuum flask to take hot coffee to work or other places?
in reply to Matthew Garrett

if you want to take my family as a test case, the three Californians living in Britain all have them, the Brit does not
in reply to Matthew Garrett

I answered British + Water Bottle because despite being US; my mum is British, so I grew up with one in the house (and then got my own) and I think that's more in line with the intent of your question.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

since I used to live in Northern England for a while and tried to buy one, I have a suspicion.

At least people (some) knew what I was talking about. They referred me to the German Christmas market in town. 😅

in reply to Matthew Garrett

USian. I don't have one as an adult myself but grew up with one.

I live in America, so I guess I count as an American. I do not own a hot water bottle as such, but I do own a bunch of electric cat blankets which I have stolen and put in my bed by my feet where a HWB would go.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

British, don't own a hot water bottle. But damnit, if I ever get some spare cash I'll be getting one rather than have another winter of cold feet.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

my wife is a big electric blanket fan but I find that even in the coldest of weathers the bed warms up quickly with body heat
in reply to Matthew Garrett

Australians also have them, though how popular they are today I'm not sure (I know my parents generation had them, but I don't remember having them growing up, but also was in a more temperate location)
in reply to Matthew Garrett

Brit, have hot water bottle, but live in France. In winter my French wife never wants to bother but always steals it if I do install it.

Even though ours is French it proudly displays its British Standards Kite Mark.

in reply to Matthew Garrett

did have one but it perished and I never replaced it, which I think makes me a no
in reply to Matthew Garrett

As an American, I said no. However, my Chinese wife does own one.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

British, do not own a hot water bottle, but do own a wheat bag instead

…but I mostly use it for easing stiff/knotted muscles, rather than keeping out the cold

in reply to Matthew Garrett

British, own several hot water bottles, but I'm too tough and gnarly to use them. Bah!

joking on a serious healthcare issue, pain management
@Matthew Garrett and this is why the US has an opiate crisis, and AFAIK the UK doesn't!

I have a couple, but we're well into electric blanket season now so they won't be out the cupboard again until next year's unexpected cold snap.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

I said own a hot water bottle and I do but its stopper is knackered and so it's not actually operational. Hope that didn't mess up your stats 😝
in reply to Matthew Garrett

Not amswering the poll because not British or American, but: Dutch, I do own one and use it.
in reply to Wynke

@wynke kettle? What are you, a farmer? 😏
Quooker ftw for us
in reply to Matthew Garrett

Electric Heating pad or old laptop calculating Pi works just fine.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

American, and my hot water bottle is the only thing that gets my poor feet through winter every year.

I should, perhaps, note that I grew up in Germany, which is how I came to be in possession of said vital implement.

in reply to Matthew Garrett

Wow, interesting results so far. I know about hot water bottles from cartoons, but I’ve never known anyone to own one in real life (US here). Electric heating pads seem to be the norm here.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

@HarriettMB I own a hot water bottle but now we have an electric underblanket so I don’t use it. I bought my daughter a long cross-body HWB in a velvet case as she gets cold sitting at her desk
in reply to Matthew Garrett

I don’t call myself British but Welsh and I own a hot water bottle because 🌧️❄️💨🌫️
in reply to Matthew Garrett

No hot water bottle, but every member of the household has an electric blanket. Mine is over my lap now, but not switched on
in reply to Matthew Garrett

I'm British but live in the US at the moment, and I don't think I've ever seen a hot water bottle in the shops. I'm not sure when I had to stop using mine, but the rubber eventually perished, as tends to happen. Mine had a fleece cover made to look like Paddington Bear. It's sadly missed.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

Honestly slightly surprised that about 40% of British people don’t own hot water bottles. I wonder how many of those that don’t have electric blankets etc.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

Own several, of varying designs, many with covers I knitted myself. Am British. Often use one in the day on my lap if I'm cold.

in reply to Matthew Garrett

I'm in the UK and I definitely own one. Mine recently started leaking and I replaced it the same day!

I don't use it for bed, as I have an electric blanket. I mostly use it for snuggling up of a long winter evening. I also find it very soothing when my back is sore.

in reply to Matthew Garrett

I am in the US and do not own one but know what they are because I mostly watch British TV shows.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

I find a cloth bag full of grain, microwaved as needed, gets the job done and is less traumatic when it loses containment.
