I’m gonna step away and try to mourn (after my 3 hour cognitive test at least).

I understand the importance of hope and fighting. I’m just not there yet. I need to cry if I can. I need to mourn the cruelness of others, especially for my trans kin who just want to live their lives. My disabled kin who already have so little hope. Those in imminent danger. Those even more afraid than me.

I think I might want to learn to knit.

A long time ago I made a scarf, once. Advice for a basic beginner? Where to find affordable tools? (We have two fiber arts stores in town but leaving the house is increasingly difficult :/ maybe I’ll go if/when I get SSDI…)

@Feer Wytch (Nyx?) after you are no longer a completely and utterly basic beginner I've found that the stitch structure posts by @Naomi P are useful when learning new stitches and being able to read your work

I usually give the advice to start with wooden knitting needles because they "grip" the yarn better and it makes it easier to hold it.

People who knit usually collect shit tons of needles, so honestly just asking around might produce a set for free. Maybe check your local library, senior center, or church if there's a knitting circle, they might even give you some yarn to work with too.

@Cat @Feer Wytch (Nyx?) I can confirm that knitters tend to collect needles, especially needles that they have tried, but have found are not for them¹, and may be happy to give them to somebody who is learning to knit

(also, in my experience crafters tend to be quite enthusiastic at helping beginners in their craft :D )

¹ not necessarily because they are bad needles: e.g. I had a few wood and bamboo needles from good brands that I've given to my mother because I've found I significantly prefer metal ones

@thegiddystitcher has a lot of crafty videos. Might be able to impart some tips for learning the skill.

@fluffgar Thank you ❤

@moss I'd echo other advice in this thread so far. Circular needles are going to be the most versatile option, and you'll want to make sure you're using a fairly light coloured yarn (that part is really important!)

There are TONS of tutorials online so it's just a case of knowing what you need to look up. Which is casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, binding off.

With knit and purl stitches you can make all kinds of cool stuff already.

And of course, if in doubt, knitting Fedi has your back!
