Good morning Fedi friends!

I'm writing a guide about how to install the #YunoHost self-hosting system... from the POV of a newbie.

I did so last December and it was the most empowering thing. I'm now the admin of my own GoToSocial, Pixelfed, PeerTube and NextCloud instances.

I'd love your input: which app should I feature / install in my guide?

  • Mastodon (microblogging) (24%, 93 votes)
  • Sharkey (microblogging) (5%, 20 votes)
  • NextCloud (online storage + apps) (53%, 202 votes)

Could you please also mention how to move an existing Mastodon-server to yunohost? That‘s also a real challenge!
in reply to KDSZ Bayern

I suppose that if you wanted to move your Mastodon account from an instance where it's hosted (by someone else) to your own self-hosted instance powered by YunoHost, you'd have to follow the usual steps...

I would:
1) buy a VPS
2) install YunoHost
3) associate your desired domain name to it
4) install Mastodon
5) start the move process...

@KDSZ Bayern

You may want to take a look at the migration procedures for a Mastodon setup.

docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/mi…

Mastodon_ynh is pretty much standard, just packaged with an automated Installation script.

Most people need data sharing and backups and relief from subscription services. So I voted for NextCloud.
in reply to Albert Cardona

@albertcardona NextCloud is AMAZING! It has fully replaced Dropbox, Google Docs and WeTransfer for me 😊
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

@albertcardona a thought for structuring the guide, a meta guide: build your digital sovereignty.
1. custom domain
2. domain email
3. personal site
4. data sync. files, contacts, bookmarks, ...
5. data sharing
6. social: blog, micro-blog, ...

a work through this and have total ownership of your digital life. or take the bits you want

in reply to cuan_knaggs

@albertcardona and once you've written the guide maybe you can give it to the EU. they seem to have some trouble understanding
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

did you maybe write a guide on what is there? What are the open source services worth hosting, how they differ and what are the benefits and drawbacks? Kind of a map for a new comers to orientat them selves?
in reply to LV 426 Survivor

@lv_426_survivor I'm writing a guide now... but it's impossible to cover all apps offered by YunoHost because they're in the hundreds.

I'm making the case for digital sovereignty and doing an overview of what the process is like because it's truly accessible to all... you don't need to be a dev to get into it

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I voted for NextCloud (even though I work with Mastodon!) it has so much more utility for families. Besides, for novices, it's so much better for them to join a bigger instance.
in reply to Scott Jenson

@scottjenson thanks Scott!

Indeed... I can self-host now but I'm still keeping my main Fediverse profile on mastodon.social (and I'm donating to it monthly) for its reliability and solidity.

Self-hosting NextCloud has been a total game-changer, as it has come to replace Dropbox, Google Docs, Google Drive and WeTransfer for me 😊

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I'd love a NextCloud one as I'm using it but hosted by LibreCloud I think. I'd love to self host that for a variety of reasons, especially privacy.
in reply to The Pink Fury

@alexisbushnell it looks like you may get your wish Alexis! (it's the most popular choice so far...)
in reply to Ludovic :Firefox: :FreeBSD:

@usul agree with you - I should have probably included Pixelfed (since I'm self-hosting it). Bookwyrm I want to try... but don't feel comfortable including something I'm not using. Ditto for Pleroma
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I've never fancied hosting my own mastodon, etc as I don't want to do much moderating, but I'm on a similar journey as you with yunohost and my favourites so far are: nextcloud, navidrome, bookwyrm and searxng.

Oh and Gemserv but I don't think that will make many polls.

Edit: Kavita is good too if you have ebooks, and as a web dev wordpress and eleventy are in there too. So many choices!

@alansuspect thanks!

it's a little niche but I also love hosting my own #LinkStack. You can see it in action here: elena.social

in reply to Alan

@alansuspect “oh cool another thing to self-host” is the theme of the year for me 😂😅

@Elena Rossini ⁂ @Alan /me throws a bepasty and runs away :D

(it's a pastebin for text, but also random file formats, and also works as an url shortener)

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

not exactly what you want, but if you're looking to do nextcloud then check out HestiaCP. It will do all the setup (and more) for you. It's not Fedi specific though.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

didn't know #YunoHost, nice perhaps for a #HomeLab too
Decentralized server aimed at non-techies

I have been thinking on playing with #matrix and chat and also I want a private kanban solution. So that would be a nice little project.
I have #proxmox as basis so a #Linux VM extra at home is no problem.
All runs in a closet

NextCloud please because that's still the most complicated thing for me, and I'm also on @yunohost Thanks in advance!
