I am now on a train from Leeds to York which is diverted via a bit of line I’ve never been on before. I am on this train because I paid good money to avoid the rail replacement bus from Leeds to Newcastle.

The train has been cleverly designed to prevent the catering trolley getting past if the wheelchair space is in use.

Changed at York to another diverted train. I have plenty of train snacks.
in reply to Feòrag

The train has arrived at Newcastle in good time, and we are now sat here for another 15 minutes.

This train has a different example of crappy design than the previous one. The buttons to operate the loo doors are by a door to the outside. The buttons for that are close to the loo ones and are of exactly the same design.

Charlie Stross reshared this.

According to a member of train staff, she’s had to help passengers trying to alight, who were trying to open the door by pressing the loo door button.

I cannot understand how that design got through the process without it being pointed out... Then again, maybe my expectations are probably set too high.

I feel your pain - diversions on the East Coast Main Line are never fun. Well, except for me in Sunderland who gets to watch the LNER Azuma trains taking the mother of all scenic routes between Newcastle and York via the Tyne and Wear Metro lines.

Worth noting for bystanders: @feorag's route home is up the ECML, which means going through Newcastle on a Saturday night. The wildlife GENERALLY doesn't stop in first class and is usually only around for a couple of stops either side of the big city, so if you book in advance you can usually avoid the worst of the drunken hordes, but the experience can be Educational.

@cstross I still don't understand how the Bigg Market doesn't have a frostbite treatment centre next door
in reply to The Penguin of Evil

@etchedpixels @cstross My sister’s family is up there. I once turned up in walking boots, wrapped up in wooly hat an scarf and thick coat, because of the snow on the ground. There was some lass heading towards the market in skimpy little dress and stiletto open toes strappy shoes standing in the snow. How she didn’t lose her toes through frostbite I will never know.

PS my niece is now of a similar age and dresses similarly for a night out!

@cstross
Also don't take the Friday or Saturday night bus from Newcastle to Durham.
in reply to Dave Gray

@dph3dg Not to mention the terror that was the last train from Bradford to Leeds on a Saturday night!

@Uilebheist The buttons inside are tactile, and the lock is a handle, but both are quite far from the door.

@Uilebheist The loo nearest me is specifically an accessible one. The others might be less good.

@LinuxAndYarn The cart size is a standard. I think the designers never expected the wheelchair spaces to ever be used.

@Uilebheist There was a crew member standing by the door, outside the train. Perhaps that’s part of her job?

@Uilebheist I have a 15 days in two months Interrail pass I intend to start using in mid-May. Thoughts include that city with the weird transport (was that Genoa?) and a beer/funicular ride in San Marino. Know anyone who speaks Italian and is sympathetic to veganism?

Which reminds me, I need to go on a proper train journey.
TGV are very comfortable etc but there's no "special entertainment" on them.
(And there's this weird business that with my railcard first class tickets are almost always a lot cheaper than second class, it does feel like cheating)

@LinuxAndYarn The train I am on now, built to the same loading gauge, has two wheelchair spaces either side of a wide door. I’m sure the trolley would get through fine if one or both of them were in use.
Unknown parent

Feòrag
@Uilebheist I’ve never been. Looks like you earn your beer there.
Unknown parent

Uilebheist
Ah and yes, Genoa had that weird funicular.
Don't know about San Marino, haven't been in years, but I suppose that's just an excuse to go back.
Unknown parent

Feòrag
@Uilebheist There is a bus from Rimini. I’m hoping there’s one to the bottom of the funicular.
in reply to Feòrag

@Feòrag @Uilebheist do you already know that in that part of the world (Emilia Romagna, I believe the cuisine in San Marino has the same issue) things like bread and potatoes by default are *not* vegetarian, nevermind vegan?

asking in advance is safest
