Mastodon #psa: there's a post going around about #mozilla #firefox and the salary of the Mozilla Corporation CEO. This post is based on a blog post written by an openly transphobic fascist, Brian Lunduke, who has a beef with Mozilla for them treating trans employees like human beings.

It doesn't matter how true the material is; we must not take decisions based on information collated with such motives.

edit: post now changed to not link there. an improvement.

@feld @jade I could buy ten homes a year in the world's most expensive city for that money. It is a ton of money.

Are there CEOs that earn more? For sure. Do they also receive raises while firing people and losing market share? That happens too. Does that justify it? No.

@feld Not a "nice condo", not 2000 ftΒ², I'm talking normal homes that median-income people buy, like the one I'm currently renting.

Uh, so that's why I've read his name recently, I almost managed to forget his existence. 🀒

how do you end up talking about trans and facism when questioning the CEOs calary?

No matter who brought it up. I did a post at the same time questioning it because mozilla send an email to everyone asking for donations.

I have no clue who that person is but it's nuts to move the center of discussion. I think that's called whataboutitsm, right?

in reply to Mamus

@mamus the reason we're having a discussion about the thing at all is because a fascist brought it up because he's mad for really really bad reasons. should fascists being mad be given that narrative power?

analogy: you have a bunch of oil companies clubbing baby seals. one of them is clubbing 10 times as many seals as the next but a fascist writes an article about the one clubbing half as many as average because they have a rainbow logo, drumming up a bunch of outrage at that one.

regarding the agenda: which company is worse in this case? Mozilla is the only company of that size that asks for donations I am aware of
in reply to systemd-jaded

I don't understand how that is a response to my question?
in reply to Mamus

@mamus she's saying that it's the Mozilla Foundation that's asking for donations, not the for-profit Mozilla Corporation (owned by the Foundation), and commenting that the structure is somewhat confusing.
in reply to Patrizia

@patrizia thx. I still don't understand how that affects the discussion. There's a mother company that's more than capable to bring up the funds. Why should anyone donate to firefox? Why don't they give more working students a chance to have a look at firefox' code by paying them to do so?
in reply to Mamus

@mamus The distinction matters because:

The Mozilla Foundation does not fund Firefox development.

The for-profit Mozilla Corporation, which *does not* receive any of the donation money, payrolls Firefox development.

So this has spread like wildfire without people realizing:
- Not a single dollar of the CEO's pay comes from donations.
- The donations were never going towards Firefox anyway.

@kapsiR And here are a few links for what you support with donations to the Mozilla FOUNDATION:

foundation.mozilla.org/en/what…
foundation.mozilla.org/en/what…

The money is not used at all to pay the development of Firefox, any other product of the Mozilla Corporation, or any salary*.

*) Thunderbird is a product from MZLA and 99 % of their income are donations. They pay the employees with donations. But MZLA is not the Mozilla Corporation, and you use a different form to donate for Thunderbird.
