Get no sleep, decide to cheer myself up by finally looking at #Postcrossing to see what all the fuss is about.

Source some nice postcards that aren't too pricey.

Find out about the extortionate international postage cost from the UK that makes it a non-starter.

Be sad.

End up down rabbithole of the discounted stamp market.

Oh no. Now I kind of want to collect #stamps.

Once you have signed up you can join the forum to exchange cards directly, for example by joining the UK themed ones that specify local postage only. But yes UK intl postage has put an end to most of my activities now (member for 8y)
Edit: only just saw the stamp comment. Yes random picture stamps are FUN!

@AnjaC I'd already signed up for an account before discovering the postage problem so will have to take a look at the forum, thanks!

My mam used to collect stamps when she was younger, I remember thinking that was really weird. Now, sleep deprived as I am, I suddenly get it.

I went to the post office yesterday to send postcards to family and friends (mostly abroad) and yes... I can confirm my wallet is very sad.

I don't mind so much when I'm sending to Australia but when it's The Netherlands or France, I wonder if taking the boat across to deliver the cards wouldn't be cheaper overall 😂

PS: I'm always happy to exchange postcards if you want (but zero worries if you'd rather not).

in reply to Allysse Riordan

@allysseriordan May just take you up on that, if I do get round to buying some and don't just spend the money on pretty stamps instead 👀

Hah, reading the listing on some pretty stamps (yes I am still on this)...

"These collectible British stamps can be put away as a keepsake or they can even be used to post letters".

EVEN to post letters! 🤯

in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

I took a looong break from postcrossing when our stamps got ridiculous, but they've decided postcards can be cheaper than letters again so I'm back.
in reply to Lyn

@frogglin That's what confused me at first, I was expecting to find an "oh it's just a postcard" price but apparently no. Sad times.

greeting card price? That's what ours falls under.

I looked for prepaid postcards but looks like Royal Mail don't do that. Auspost does maxi cards that work out cheaper.

Dave comes down for his lunch and asks, in the most put-upon voice imaginable:

"So you're into stamps now, then?"

Naturally I responded by telling him all about how you can get these cool Warhammer stamps, and also how the ones without a pence value on them are actually an investment because they'll be worth more when the postage prices go up again...

He definitely seemed like he was listening.

Final update: I have bought postcards and stamps that I really shouldn't have bought, and you are not surprised.
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

Somehow my first lot of stamps from Philatelink arrived less than 24 hours from ordering, that's good service!

I just bought enough to get started with sending postcards for now, not intending to actually collect any of them.

But here are some of the nicer ones, the sabre-tooth cat is very cool and the heads or tails stamp is interactive!

i found an envelope full of unused RM stamps the other day actually that i'd bought because they were pretty, never got round to using all of (i'd never have used them all anyway bc see: pretty), and then we moved away ...
in reply to laen🪻

@moonrabbit Hey if they're the first or second class ones they might be worth a bit more now!
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@moonrabbit The serious hobbyist who also wants to play with their toys know: buy two. One for mint in box, one to play with.

Oooh! Have you considered having a person to send your being-used stamp (who then sends you it back cancelled) so you have both the mint in box and the cancelled versions of the stamp? Like a scrapbook entry for your favorites with explanations about what the stamp represents and the artist who created it?

No!!!!!!!! I don’t want another hobby!

in reply to Fjord In Progress

@semiotic_pirate @moonrabbit Haha, I've indeed already started making a mental list of Fedi friends in different countries who might be up for some stamp hijinks 😉
in reply to Gina (she/they)

@GinaT86 Definitely saving that one for someone who says in their profile that they like cool stamps :D
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

Have fun with your new hobby!

I’ve tried to digitize my collecting - though it doesn’t always work. Hence my enamel pin boards. But with stamps… I found Slowly. You can just use it to collect stamps or you can do that and start writing pen pals from around the world.

The artwork isn’t as intricate as paper stamps. But they’re still pretty.

Kate joined this for a while a few years back, and they paid her in literally more regular stamps than you can contemplate, but also occasionally sent collectables. She just put them all straight on eBay I think, but if you want a way to get free collector packs...

Not that I'm encouraging anything here 😬

@ric Well that sounds fun even without the chance at special stamps!

yeah, it is bad here in NL but it's gone to ridiculous in UK!
Do check out Philatelink for cheaper and fun stamps, they're trustworthy.

For cheap postcards by an artist I recommend Alexia Claire (on Etsy I think)

(Yes, when I visit the UK I make sure to order things at my friend's address 😉)

in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

you're welcome! It's a nice rabbit hole, even if you in the end decide the costs are not worth it
