Revolutionary road vs. Confessions of a Crap Artist

I just read two books that somehow complement each other and talks about the same problem, and on the other hand are as different culturally and in world-view as can be. Both books are from USA and both books are written in the late fifties and early sixties (though one of them was first published much later.)

The first one is Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates - a classic American chamber play taking place in the East coast suburbs.

The plot is simple: a progressive married couple tries to turn their marriage around in the simple way that she wants to support them economically to give him time to indulge in his creative and artistic sides. But when they try to act out the plan, the conventions of society both in their community, but even more inside themselves, their inhibitions, their cowardice, and their longing makes it all end in disaster.

(The book was made into a film in 2008 with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in the leading roles.)

The other book is in many ways the flipside of Revolutionary Road, and it is not surprisingly written on the flipside of USA: in California. It has the quirky title, Confessions of a Crap Artist and is written by the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick. It is not a science fiction though, and despite the fact that it was written in 1959, three years prior to Yates' book, it was first published in 1975 (the publisher only wanted his scifi).

In the book we meet another couple, and a couple that is not at all as idealistic and progressive as the one in Revolutionary Road. Actually they are rather materialistic and selfish. The only altruistic thing they do is letting the wife's mentally strange brother live with them, and mostly because they fell obliged to.

As in Revolutionary Road the marriage falls apart but the anguished couple can not end it because of the taboo of divorce. While the couple destroys each other the simpleton brother slowly, takes over the responsibilities of his sister and brother in law, especially the care of their two children.

If I was an academic I would write a beautiful little paper making a comparative analysis of these two books that seems to orbit the same sun but on opposed sides of it. I find the relationship between the two books almost electric...

But as I am only a simple artist, I will just invite you to read these two fine artworks.

A Winter Dawn

Lucy Maud Montgomery

Above the marge of night a star still shines, And on the frosty hills the sombre pines Harbor an eerie wind that crooneth low Over the glimmering wastes of virgin snow.

Through the pale arch of orient the morn Comes in a milk-white splendor newly-born, A sword of crimson cuts in twain the gray Banners of shadow hosts, and lo, the day!

"Bluebird"

Charles Bukowski

there’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too tough for him, I say, stay in there, I’m not going to let anybody see you.

there’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I pour whiskey on him and inhale cigarette smoke and the whores and the bartenders and the grocery clerks never know that he’s in there.

there’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too tough for him, I say, stay down, do you want to mess me up? you want to screw up the works? you want to blow my book sales in Europe?

there’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too clever, I only let him out at night sometimes when everybody’s asleep. I say, I know that you’re there, so don’t be sad. then I put him back, but he’s singing a little in there, I haven’t quite let him die and we sleep together like that with our secret pact and it’s nice enough to make a man weep, but I don’t weep, do you?

Addicted to chaos

Finnish artist Mikko Lyytinen's lifestory. Trying to introduce himself to the Steemit community, but really creating rough, unedited literature. A long and uneven ride, but definitely worth the read. https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@mikkolyytinen/addicted-to-chaos-my-reintroduction

to read : Hyperion cantos : a good parable for an AI controlled world …

I just finished the Hyperion cycle (Hyperion and the Fall of Hyperion) of Dan Simmons that I should have read long ago… These books have been written in a pre internet era (1989-1990) but describe a future where humans manage to spread in space thanks to AI’s that “help” them to build “distrans gates” that make short-cuts in space… and also appears to have submitted them into some kind of soft/unconscious slavery… It’s very bizarre how it relates to the way GAFAMs are “using” users to grow through them and prepare the awakening of “intelligent artificial beings” living in the “infosphere” in a spurious symbiotic way of living with humans. Without spoiling, we can say that interestingly, it really poses the problem of dependency to automatic decision making systems that takes nearly all the practical decisions and management task. And the problem of privacy is very well approached too : I like the way it describes the habits of people living in that era, where making love in front of a electronic eye is compared to doing it in front of the house cat : maybe the first time it’s a bit annoying, but you quickly forget about it… (and of course everything is recorded, analysed, transferred through the infosphere and those AI’s.) Even the way it “works” technically in the fiction is really nice and refreshing, and could be related to the actual developments of such information system by the big corps. to a certain extend… all written 25 years ago ! (can’t tell more without spoiling ;) ) I wish we could do the same as in the story, and free ourself once… but… that’s not easy mess ;) I’m less fan of the systematic recourse to classical literature and ancient Greece mythology, but it serves it purpose well, and is not “boring” as it can in other authors using the same kind of writing strategy. In any case, great books of anticipation/S-F to read if not done already ! PS : there is a feature film supposedly in the work on this, but I would really encourage to read the book : as for the Dune cycle of Frank Herbert, movies are quite bad at putting whole universe and dozens of characters in a 2h timeframe… #sf #literature #books #anticipation #gafam #AI #spaceopera
