Hiya, everyone, I’m #newhere and---you guessed it---another proactive and nontechy #Gplusrefugee.

Here's my (very abbreviated, in advance of sunset... oh, let's begin with Tuesday's sunrise! here in pdx....) G+ stream (I think!)

https://plus.google.com/u/0/101254272855562627551

I’m interested in #wildflowers, #artanddesign, #illustrations, #linguistics...... Will think of more later. I'm not a hashtag girl.:(
But thanks for taking me in, in advance.... & Special thanks to the prescient person who created this space before Black Monday :)

Hey everyone, I’m kind of #newhere. After having spent close to a year just reading, I feel I'm ready to start participating. I'm a Belgian who's lived in Japan for over 30 years, and I’m interested in #vintage #denim, #linguistics, #opensource #software, #craftbeer (especially #belgianbeer), #latteart, and #rugby.

Really sad that people think "nerdy fantasy and dragons" when they think about role-playing games. Case in point: through the brilliant Jason Morningstar I just learned about a fascinating new RPG about dying languages. It's called Dialect and it's on Kickstarter right now.

From what I understand it's about inventing the story of a small, isolated community that has their own language/dialect, invent words for that language and see the community change over time, the language evolve, and, finally, the language die. Of course, this can be placed in any setting (a jungle, another planet, ...).

The linguist in me is super-excited. I think I'll buy it, even if I may never get the chance to play. I'm sure reading the book is going to be worth the price!

A Language To Unite #Humankind

People are apt to make fun of other people’s habit of talking about the weather to their neighbors in the elevator. They shouldn’t make fun. By invoking the one thing that we know we have in common with others, we throw a rope across the divide, asserting that, whatever our differences, we do share something: when it rains on one of us, it’s going to rain on the other one, too. Schor quotes the Spanish Esperantist Jorge Camacho: “Esperanto continues to give me something . . . which I don’t find anywhere else, an irrational sense of directly belonging to the world.”

Ethereum Must Drop Turing Completeness, Or It Will Fail

Great talk by Meredith tonight at the Ethereum Meetup in Munich (as announced a few posts back) that dived deep into certain aspects of blockchain protocols.

"The single one element you get from the blockchain you don't get from other tools is consensus. If you don't need consensus, you don't need a blockchain!"

In Bitcoin, the consensus is about transactions. Also its transaction language is probably context-free, but it's very cautiously and conservatively implemented. Its subset is probably regular.

In Ethereum, consensus is about .. well, anything. Its transaction language is deliberately Turing-complete, and about as readable as any other programming language.

Cryptographic Trust -- But of what?
Would you trust this contract?
How about now that I signed it?
Then why did anyone sign on with TheDAO?

How did TheDAO hack happen? http://hackingdistributed.com/2016/06/18/analysis-of-the-dao-exploit/

How do we stop this from happening again?
You don't.
Unless you're willing to listen to her: "No More Turing Complete Input Languages!"
Rice's Theorem: For any non-trivial property of partial functions, no general and effective method can decide whether an algorithm computes a partial function with that property.
Thus, Ethereum should drop its Turing-complete language, or things like TheDAO hack will happen again and again!
