I am a proud co-owner (with my partner and more than 500 other people) of the #FoodConnectShed in #Salisbury, #Brisbane.
#FoodConnect tries to change #food distribution, selling locally-produced food for the last ~13 years. #Farmers get better wages, consumers know more about their farmers and the food they eat, the industry is lighter on the #environment, and the new shed will aim at taking that project further: producing some greens inner-city, organising markets where farmers and cooks sell direct to clients... as well as pushing for #women's business ownership and collaboration with the local #Aboriginal community.
Food Connect Shed – by the community, for the community

Do NOT consume palm oil. Palm oil plantations KILL helpless orangutans on purpose. When you eat processed food products with palm oil, THIS is what you are buying.

Quote Taken from COP (Centre For Orangutan Protection)
"Orangutans’ #poaching is done deliberately as a policy made by #palmoil #corporations. Therefore they hire local people as pest busters, who serve the #corporation with #killing any #wild #animals, including #orangutans, which spoil #palm oil trees within the #plantations. The pest busters will bring up a cut-off hand of an #orangutan they have killed and hand it to the corporation as a proof. When they find an adult female orangutan with her baby, they will usually kill the ‘mother‘ and take away the baby for pet or sale".

It is estimated that over 50 Orangutan are killed every week due to #deforestation. #Forest homes are cleared by either heavy machinery or fire. Orangutans are left starved with no #food source and often trapped in pockets of isolated areas with no way out and often wander onto plantations searching for food. The orangutan are considered a pest by many of the oil palm companies as they often destroy young palm plants in the hope of finding food. They are run over by excavation equipment, doused in petrol and burnt alive, captured, tortured, beaten, shot with air guns or slaughtered. As forest home is destroyed they become vulnerable to poachers. Infant orangutans have monetary value and are often kept as pets or illegally smuggled, the only way a mother will let go of her infant is if she has been killed.

Müesli #8

After 9 follows 8. Yet another free müesli recipe. Yet another "version 2" (the first version has never been published).
This time, it's not a reverse engineered proprietary müesli, only inspired by various so-called tropical müeslis:

* coarse oat flakes, 500 g
* cacao beans (broken or "nibs"), 100 g
* mango (dried), 100 g
* sunflower seed, 100 g
* banana chips, 50 g
* coconut flakes, 50 g
* pumpkin seed, 50 g
* whole cashew nuts, 50 g

Again it's < 10 % sugar. Again, it's best served with out milk (< 5 % sugar).
But this time, it's not for cats! Cats, so I heard, must not eat any cacao or chocolate.

I started picking my seed corn today for next spring. I hand harvest them from plants that have ideal characteristic combinations of yield, standability, insect and mould tolerance, dry down ability etc.It is open pollinated and has lots of cool colours. I don't rely on the corporate seed companies for my seed. Each cob will have about 400-500 seeds on average. When I plant next spring I will need 27,000 seeds per acre which works out to approximately 70 cobs to plant an acre. It will need to dry some more and then to be shelled from the cob. #non-gmo #food #seed

https://www.thelocal.it/20181010/the-15-absolute-worst-things-about-living-in-italy

A British writer based in Rome takes a tongue-in-cheek look at living in Italy. Warning: sarcasm ahead.
  • Cheap coffee
  • Taking food seriously
  • All those ancient ruins lying around
  • Endless summer holidays
  • Wasting two hours on lunch
  • Too much personal contact
  • Sticking to what's in season
  • Art overdose
  • Tinnitus
  • Too many desserts

  • So much natural beauty it's unfair
  • Slow food

Entrenched Industries In Panic As Vegan Market Soars

With veganism breaking growth and sales records all over the World, we explore the ways in which industry is pushing back

https://youtu.be/gl9d7dl0HVE

#Veganism is taking off in a big way.

That’s not an opinion. That’s fact. More people—everywhere—are becoming #vegan.

Let’s start in the #UK. There are now 350% more vegans compared to a decade ago. This is reflected in burgeoning #industries in many sectors. Just take the #food industry—where plant based product sales are up 1,500%.

Rarely does a day go by without new vegan options coming out. For example, #supermarket giant Sainsbury’s recently launched a new line of vegan #cheese, which exceeded expected #sales by 300%.

Elsewhere, for example in #Australia, #Germany, #Russia and the #US, similar trends have emerged. The “Try Vegan This January” campaign #Veganuary just broke records too, as did the number of people searching for ‘vegan’ on Google.

But there has been a twist. Because as people are adopting veganism more and more, there has been a #pushback from industry. Corporate leaders, clearly feeling threatened, are pressuring #lawmakers to nip this trend in the bud.

In the US, many states have passed what are known as #ag-gag bills. These laws make it a #felony to do something as seemingly trivial as taking a picture of a suffering #pig in a factory farm. And why? Because it’s a threat to #profits.

‍Ag gag laws can criminalize people for exposing farmed animal lives

And what’s worse? It’s happening in Australia, too. Their new Biosecurity Bill dubbed the Australian “ag-gag” legislation hands power to law enforcement officials, allowing them to prosecute #whistleblowers revealing the practices of corporate-sanctioned animal rights abusers.

This attempt to stifle dissent, along with the vast #livestock #subsidies designed to keep #meat, #dairy and #eggs cheap for consumers, shows just how entrenched the animal agriculture industries are. The US dairy industry, for example, is currently pleading with congress to pressure the FDA to issue a ruling that #plant-based #milk can’t be called “milk”.

BBC’s latest “clean eating” documentary is another case in point. The programme, by many accounts, provided a biased representation of the benefits of plant based nutrition under the guise of educating the public about popular diets.

It may be no surprise that it later transpired that the presenter’s funding source was Helmholz Alliance, which is connected with Sanofi Aventis #Pharmaceuticals, the fifth largest #drug #company in the World.

Sanofi is the maker of some of the most popular #diabetes drugs on the market, #Lantus and the newly-released #Toujeo. They also produce a host of drugs to treat #cardiovascular #disease. Both diseases, incidentally, can be effectively treated, and even reversed, with a plant-based #diet.

The conflicts of interest are not always obvious, but they certainly exist. As Nelson Campbell, founder of Plant Pure, Inc. last week said:
_“The power of industry is enormous… their collusion with #academia, #media and #government runs deep.”_

The harm caused as a result of this industry influence cannot be overstated. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change, amazon destruction, species extinction, ocean dead zones, antibiotic resistance and the inefficient feeding of a growing population.

So, why is there not more awareness of the detrimental effects? Especially given that meat, dairy and eggs are completely unnecessary for optimal #health, and are among the to chronic disease.__

Put simply, __there is a network of industries and institutions that coexist, embedding themselves in society, and they have a vested interest in holding back veganism
. They mutually benefit each other, habituating into us food habits that cause great harm.

Unless we question the false bedrock assumptions about the role of animal products—that, for example we need meat, dairy and eggs for #protein—and rid ourselves of our archaic #status-quo attitudes—that things will never change—animal #exploitation will be perpetuated and the health of our planet and it’s people undermined.

But there is hope. The animal agriculture industry and mainstream media no longer control the messages. Due to the Internet, new communication pathways are now available.

We have an amazing opportunity to change the World. Lets not be confused by the #establishment agenda that too easily diverts, nor demoralized when their power feels too strong. Stand up, speak up, and I promise...

__you will be on the right side of history.__

If you thought that Planned Parenthood selling the body parts of aborted babies was evil, then you will be shocked by those companies using these body parts as flavor additives.

The 1973 science fiction film Soylent Green was about food produced from human body parts. It appears Kraft Foods, Pepsi Corporation (PepsiCo) and Nestle are creating a new wave of products using aborted baby body parts provided by Semonyx and StemExpress. Science fiction is now a scientific reality. Should the Food and Drug Administration require a label on those products, listed below, that use baby parts as flavor additives?

Perhaps we should call these products Semonyx Green or StemExpress Green?

The Conservative Post reports:

Famous food companies have been exposed using tissue from aborted babies to make flavor additives in processed foods.

Kraft, PepsiCo, Nestle, work with Semonyx, a California-based [company]that uses aborted embryonic cells to test fake flavoring chemicals.

The aborted human fetal cell line is known as “HEK-293,” and it is used to see how the human palate will react to synthetic flavors. Since most of today’s processed food lacks flavor, companies like Semonyx are hired to develop flavors on their own.

“What they don’t tell the public is that they are using HEK 293 — human embryonic kidney cells taken from an electively aborted baby to produce those receptors,” said Debi Vinnedge of the pro-life group Children of God for Life. “They could have easily chosen animal, insect, or other morally obtained human cells expressing the G protein for taste receptors.”

In a column titled Meet the Company Buying Planned Parenthood’s Baby ‘Specimens’ Paul Bios writes:

Planned Parenthood’s hand in this nauseating maltreatment of human beings represents only the tip of the iceberg and has been the source of tremendous benefit for one company purchasing PP’s baby parts and then selling them off to biomedical researchers for profit.

That company is StemExpress, and it describes itself as “a multi-million dollar company that supplies human blood, tissue products, primary cells and other clinical specimens to biomedical researchers.” It also boasts of offering “the largest variety of raw material in the industry, as well as fresh, fixed and cryopreserved human primary cells.”

On the company’s site, which has been experiencing difficulty in recent days owing to high traffic, StemExpress openly states in bold print its “human tissue products range from fetal to adult” while guaranteeing that “every sample delivers the purity, viability and quality” the buyers look for.

Taking its cues from Amazon, StemExpress provides easy-to-use shopping carts complete with user-friendly dropdown boxes that allow the customer to purchase products like a “fetal liver” of their choice for as low $610.
