I'm running a #Degoogling #Android #workshop in #Vancouver!

#Cellphones come packed with increasing amounts of unnecessary #bloatware, both from #Google as well as manufacturer and manufacturer-associated #apps you never, ever see after neatly tucking them away into a miscellaneous folder somewhere far out of swiping reach (Google Play Magazines, lol)... much like computers used to until we learned to not be afraid of digging in behind the screen and deleting that garbage (Norton Antivirus, lol).

But there's good news! You can regain control over your phone. You can delete these apps that constantly spy on you, that continue taking up valuable space, that keep asking you for unnecessary updates. The process is simple; it just takes a bit of poking around and not being afraid of black screens with white letters.

Workshop outline: There will be two parts. In the first, I'll explain the basics behind unlocking and rooting an Android phone, installing recovery software (TWRP or ClockworkMod), debloating a device of unnecessary firmware and Google apps, installing a custom Google Apps set (just the Play Store, that's all you really need), and lastly how to install a custom ROM (a skin over the stock Android software, eg: #CyanogenMod, #ParanoidAndroid, Oxygen/Hydrogen OS). There will also be a minute dedicated to talking about MD5 checks, and why performing these is key before installing any sort of software, and I may also install CyanogenMod live onto my OnePlus 3 so you can see how that's done. The second part will be a discussion about apps in general and alternatives to Google in specific, from messaging (Signal, Telegram) to search (StartPage) to maps (OpenStreetMap) to even the Play Store itself (F-Droid).

Who is this for? Anyone who wants to recover control over their device; anyone who wants to understand how Android works at a very basic level. Absolutely zero technical skill is required. I came at this from a real side angle and suspect everyone else is too. And don’t expect to get inside your phone at all; this will be a mere information session on how I got into mine. The workshop is completely free, but donations to DCTRL are always appreciated!

Hi Diasporians! #Question about #smartphones here.

My partner needs a new one, and ideally we want:
  • As much #FreeSoftware as possible but it most likely has to be based on #Android to have the large app catalogue available (there's a few she can't do without);
  • Somewhat #ethical in the #social and #environmental side;
  • Possible to buy online from Australia.
I know about #Fairphone (I have a FP1) but we can't buy it in Australia, and the FP2 is unfortunately a bit too dear for us...

I am interested in #OnePlus but they weirdly have never published anything about their practices when it comes to sustainability and human rights, and refuse to provide that information even to their customers.

Any suggestions?

I did it !

Joining D* was the first step of many to win back my #privacy online and stop supporting bad application. Long time this was waiting inside me.
Since it could be useful to others and because I still need some #help to solve some remaining issues, here is a brief "before/after" list :

- #Gmail ~~ #Posteo.de
Most difficult service to replace. This one is for me the best equation including social responsibility, privacy, email extension convenience, user interface not too far behind Gmail
- #Drive #storage ~~ #Owncloud at ocloud.de, free bundle for now
- #Drive #collaboration ~~ #Framapad for text and have to try framacalc to see if powerful enough for sheet
- #Drive #share ~~ #Framadrop for temporary sharing and my owncloud otherwise
- #Agenda ~~ ... my notebook, no IT, just some paper and the #bulletjournal approach
- #Google ~~ #DuckDuckGo
- #Hangout / #Skype ~~ #Framatalk based on #JitsiMeet
- #Chat ~~ no solution :'( someone has one ? #HELP
- #GoogleMap ~~ #Openstreetmap
- #Pocket ~~ #Framabag based on #Wallabag
- #Facebook / #Twitter ~~ #Diaspora*
- #Smartphone ~~ my #Fairphone let you choose and #android with our without #googleapps, I'll just reset it !
- was already using #Firefox (ouf ! at least, one was right ^^)

If you have any suggestion or solution for the chat / instant messaging, feel free :) I really don't know how to get rid of messenger or whatsapp... Using them a lot and removing those will make a severe cut with my friends and family...

Installing Signal on a Google free phone

I tried to install Singal on my Google free Android phone one year ago and I was shocked when I found out that I had to install Google Play services to use Signal and there was not much info out there how to do it without it.
So now I gave it another try and after almost a whole day I finally did it.
Here is what I did:
I have rooted CyanogenMod 13 on my phone, no Google apps.
- Go to https://microg.org/ (A free-as-in-freedom re-implementation of Google’s proprietary Android user space apps and libraries.)
- Download and install GmsCore.apk, GsfProxy.apk, FakeStore.apk in this order
- Open the microG Settings and tick both checkboxes for background services
- Reboot your device
- Disable Battery Optimization for microG Services Core in System Settings > Battery > Menu > Battery optimization.
- Go to https://www.apkmirror.com and get an old version of Signal - e.g. v3.20 (you won't be able to sign up with the newest version)
- Install Signal and sign up.
- Now if everything works just download the newest version of Signal and install it.

I hope this helps others.

Now let's build a GNU one

Details: Yellow is for projects in development while green is for those that are available. Red illustrates brands that lose their monopoly condition once the respective layers are fully operational whereas light red indicates faulty technologies that we must replace.

Conversations Open Source Secure XMPP Client for Android

This article on XDA-Developers focusses on encryption features of Conversations and an interview with developer Daniel Gultsch. Nice read!
Q: What motivated you to develop Conversations?
A: I am using Jabber/XMPP for many many years. Even back in 2009 I was able to use Jabber on my Nokia e71. Sometime around the year 2012 I switched to an Android phone, so I suddenly was unable to use Jabber. [...]
Q: Can you give three reasons why Conversations protects your privacy better than Whatsapp or Threema?
A: I don’t have to give my private phone number to strangers if I want to chat with them. I could have a private and a business account. I can disable the business account after my shift, to prevent my boss from annoying me during my free time. WhatsApp allows everybody to analyze my app usage patterns any time. (My boss could stalk me to investigate if I am using WhatsApp during my working hours or if I am using WhatsApp at night instead of sleeping and coming well rested to the office.) This is different with Conversations; Conversations also doesn’t upload my entire address book to Facebook.
Q: Is it allowed to compile Conversations on your own from your Github and use it for private use?
A: Of course. Not only private, also for business and everything else you want. It is also allowed to modify the code to meet individual requirements.

XMPP-Meetup Berlin: Daniel Gultsch about good and bad client UX

Next Meeting:

Thursday, 2018-06-07, 19:00

co-up, Adalbertstr. 8, 10999 Berlin

Daniel Gultsch:
I’m going to talk about how to deal with baggage and how legacy UX (something that long time users are used to from other clients) makes it difficult to create good clients. (Which for example lead to the creation of the infamous »Expert Settings«.)
#xmpp #berlin #meeting #ux #android #conversations #federation

Apparently #Facebook steals data directly from your #android phone even if you have never had an FB account, because the built-in android Facebook app phones home and cannot be removed:

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/22/facebook_data_leak_no_account/

#DeleteFacebook #ReplaceFacebook #Privacy

Finally, I have deleted my #Google account today!

It was a long an challenging breakup. It started roughly 2 years ago, when I was not able to ignore anymore that Google started switching to the #darkside.

You can easily guess which social network I use instead of #googleplus. [Yes, I use and <3 #diaspora* ;-).]
Instead of #gmail, I use the email account provided by my workplace and #disroot for personal emails.
I chat by using #xmpp (via clients #conversations and #gajim using #omemo for #encryption).
I use #davdroid to synchronize my contact list, calendar and tasklist to my #moblie.
Instead of #chrome, I use #firefox, #torbrowser, #iceweasel, and #icecat.
Instead of #webmail, use #thundebird, #icedove and #k9 email clients.
I use #nextcloud and #syncthing, instead of #googledrive.
For #searching, I sue #duckduckgo and #searx.
Instead of #android, I use #replicant.

Instead of paying with my #privacy, I pay with #donation using #liberapay.

I'm also grateful to @Tiberiu C. Turbureanu (from #technoethical) for helping me fixing my broken replicant install.

I work in mobile app development and the technology out there to spy on you is pretty insane. There is a whole industry for snooping and reselling data. Here are some examples.

There are several SDKs (software development kits) that offer fingerprinting identity services. Meaning, when someone opens your app, it checks their device ID, IP address, GPS location, email address, etc. and makes a match to an identity. You then use this SDK to track their behavior in your app, such as purchases, interests, demographics, preferences, etc. This data is stored along with all the other apps that use the SDK. Now as an upsell, I can buy all of your behavior data from every other app that uses the same service. From the moment you install the app I know everything about you.

There are SDKs that don’t even offer a service, they just straight up pay the app maker to let their agent sit and collect data and send it up to their servers. Mostly location data.

My favorite is there’s an SDK that actually records the screen while you use the app, and the video gets sent up to the server for the app maker to see how you use their app in real time. It also tracks all of your views, swipes, and button presses tied to the video for analytics.

Basically, you should assume that every moment you are using an internet connected device, you are being observed, scrutinized, and analyzed so that someone can sell you more shit.

They are really good at this, and getting better every year. You think Facebook is listening to your microphone to serve you ads at the moment you are discussing a product? They don’t need to. They know you that well.

Edit: A lot of people are asking for specific examples of this monitoring tech. There are a ton of small players. So an example of location tracking is Tamoco. An example of behavior tracking is Branch.io (they don't advertise the data mining, but it's a back-end deal). And session monitoring is AppSee or HotJar. There are many more that I haven't heard of.

There are a ton of data resellers out there. They're typically small startups who buy and sell data, and they compete on having the most comprehensive and clean data sets. We get approached by a data reseller maybe once a month, either trying to buy our data or sell us data.

Edit: A lot of people are flippant about this idea because you "don't click on ads" or you "don't buy anything". There are people who aren't interested in just selling you products. How about voting for a particular political candidate, or for/against a ballot measure? How about selling you a particular world view? Propaganda is just like advertising, they're just selling you an idea instead of a product.

The next TWIF will be an XL edition, covering the next two weeks. That’s right, Coffee is taking some vacation, so see you in two weeks!

As usual, please report interesting updates. There are way too many app updates to keep track of them all, so we need your help to highlight the most interesting changes. And of course, we love to hear about all things involving F-Droid in some way.

Please tell us in the TWIF submission thread on the forum, or tag your update #fdroid on Mastodon. (And cc @fdroidorg@mastodon.technology to make sure it reaches our instance.) The deadline to the next TWIF is Thursday 28 June 2018, 12:00 UTC.
