ZigzagProxy

RELEASED the stable version 1.0

Immagine/foto

IN ITALIANO

More powerful and easier to use

  • source code cleaner, structured, clear, stable, easy to maintain;
  • bilingual interface and documentation: automatically, it should recognize the language used in the bash terminal, in Italian or in English for other languages (sorry: I do not know other languages);
  • more direct approach with the remote proxy update service;
  • more intuitive and functional internet connection of commands and programs through the proxies
Now the program is complete and stable.

Go to the main page of ZigzagProxy, to discover its potential:

A symbolic donation challenge

Since you are reading this post I guess you are directly interested in the improvement of Diaspora*. As you probably know Diaspora* couldn't improve without the hard and enthusiastic work of the developers. That is why

I challenge you to give at least a symbolic €0.01/week amount to the Diaspora* developers

€0.01/week is not much. It just €0.52/year so probably you can easily afford that. I guess you throw away much more to buy some fancy junk you don't even need at all ;-)

Isn't €0.01/week too little?

Yes, it is symbolic, but it is much more than nothing.

Also it can be a lot if most of us are willing to join (especially if some of us are willing to give a bit more).

For example, imagine if just 1% of the currently registered users of the federation have been taking this challenge. That would mean about €65/week for the developers. Just 15% of the users that were active in the past 6 month could give €75/week this way. 70% of the monthly active users could give €105/week for the developers by this "symbolic" donation.

Of course, you are free and encouraged to give more. (I also do so.)

How to participate?
- Create an account at https://liberapay.com.
- Add some money to your wallet.
- Start directly donating the developers.

Please, also encourage others to join this cause by spreading the message and voting on the poll below.

Lonely being free

Just finished watching Richard Stallman interviewed by Sophie Shevardnadze on RT (Russia today or Redacted Tonight? ;)). Depressing to realise that on a personal level, not one person is remotely interested in the concept of freedom software, which is of course applicable to many other aspects of life. What to do?

Democracy, the God That's Failing

When Professor Hans-Hermann #Hoppe made his famous argument against #democracy back in 2001, the notion that #voting was a lousy way to organize #society was still radical even among many #libertarians. Virtually everyone raised in a western country over the past century grew up hearing “democracy” used as a #synonym for #wonderful, #good, #just, and #valid. It takes a great deal of #unlearning to overcome this as an #adult, and to question the #wisdom of representative #government installed via democratic mechanisms.

Fast forward to 2017, however, and the case against democracy is being made right in front of our eyes. Witness #HillaryClinton, who not long ago gushed about our “sacred” right to vote — that is until her stupendous loss to #Trump. Today she clings to the specious #nonsense that the Russians somehow influenced our #election by planting stories and using #social-media, which if true would be an excellent #argument against #voting rights. If the natives are so easily duped by a few silly posts in their #Facebook feeds, why on earth is their vote meaningful or #sacred?

Other #progressives like #MichaelMoore demand that Trump be arrested, presumably for #treason. Left-leaning cable #news pundits openly call for Trump to #resign or be #impeached. #Mainstream newspapers wonder whether he’ll even finish his four-year term. The overwhelming message from the #media is that Trump is a disaster, an existential threat that must be stopped.

But it’s not just progressives questioning democratic outcomes. #Neoconservative #BillKristol tweets that he’d rather be governed by an #unaccountable #deep-state than Trump. Mild-mannered conservative moralist #DennisPrager, a #reasonable and #likeable right winger in my view, argues quite seriously that we are in the midst of a second #civil-war with those who simply reject their electoral #defeat. And the libertarianish jurist #RichardEpstein, writing for the somnambulant #HooverInstitution, unloads a #litany of #grievances against Trump that would make #BillMaher blush.

We should recall that as democratic elections go, Trump’s #victory was perfectly #legitimate. Nobody seriously challenges his margins in the key states of #Ohio, #Pennsylvania, #Wisconsin, and #Florida. Lamentations about #Clinton winning the so-called popular vote are #irrelevant and blatantly #partisan — the #ElectoralCollege is as much a part of the “rules” as having two #senators per state.

Meanwhile in the #UK, former #PrimeMinister #TonyBlair employs the language of #revolution in urging #Remain forces to “rise up” against #Brexit and overturn the #referendum in #Parliament. Never mind that #Blair is no longer an elected official and holds no #government office, never mind that both the referendum process and the Brexit vote were perfectly valid: he just doesn’t like the #results. His argument that #Leave voters had “imperfect knowledge” is both #hilarious and #disingenuous: voters always have imperfect #knowledge about candidates and policies prior to elections; pertinent new #information always comes to light after elections. If Blair thinks we can start overturning elections based on any degree of voter #ignorance, then I must suggest he begin with the vote in the House of Commons that made him #PM. And why does he, a #democrat, imagine some right to #overturn election results at all?

It’s time to call a spade a spade. All of this #angst hardly comports with our supposed #reverence for #democracy. Again, Trump handily and fairly won a democratic election just three months ago. If he’s the #devil, a wrecking ball that cannot be stopped by the other branches of government, then our entire constitutional system and its democratic mechanisms are defective. Why doesn’t the #neverTrump movement take its arguments to their #logical #conclusion, and insist an electorate that would install Donald Trump never be allowed to #vote again or have any say in organizing society?

The reality is becoming clear, even as it remains uncomfortable for many: democracy is a #sham that should be opposed by all liberty-loving people. Voting and elections confer no #legitimacy whatsoever on any government, and …

* Humanity must work together to solve the problems we face on a global scale.

* No single entity, government, company, or organization can solely achieve this.

* All entities must willingly combine forces, skills, abilities, influences, communications, and connections in order to achieve this.

* Open Access needs to be granted to knowledge, research, and discoveries.

* Censorship of any kind will only inhibit humanity's ability to work together.

Description

Throughout history, there has been a battle between those who wish to control information, and those who wish to set it free. Looking past profit and greed, there is a reasonable mentality for supporting the control of information. Humans can not always work for free, they require food, water, shelter and other essentials for survival. In order to continue quality of work, these needs must be met.

However, the money is not always reaching those who make the discoveries, and these are the people who work the hardest. This must change.

Intellectual Property is a misnomer, no single entity owns their intellect. One builds knowledge on the shoulders of others. While it is true that one deserves credit for their work, the act of disabling others to share this work is an injustice to humanity, and renders the work as useless.

A solution to this problem is more important than any other.

Without knowledge, education, and the ability to access it: Humans will not be able to make informed decisions, and will not be able to solve other complex problem they face. Until this problem is solved, humanity will continue to shuffle their feet slowly toward solutions, and when the day come that Earth is in mortal peril, Earth's population might not be ready to act.

****#Pastilda: Open-source hardware password manager****
Pastilda is an open-source hardware #password #manager, designed to manage your credentials in a handy and secure way.
Pastilda works as a #middleman between your #computer and keyboard. It provides easy and safe auto-login to your #OS, bank accounts, mailboxes, corporate #network or social media. Pastilda stores #encrypted passwords in its memory. You can request a particular password at any time by pressing a special key combination on your keyboard.
Pastilda has two USB ports: one for your keyboard, one to connect to your #PC. Your OS will recognize Pastilda as a USB keyboard and a USB flash drive.
The flash drive component stores the encrypted #KeePass 2.x database (.kdbx file) and the KeePass 2.x portable #app as needed. Your real keyboard is now visible only to Pastilda, your PC won’t see it at all.
In normal working mode, all keystrokes from your keyboard are passed through Pastilda to your PC unchanged.
When you need to sign into an account, you switch to “Pastilda mode”. That’s done by placing your cursor inside the login text box and pressing the “Ctrl + ~” key combination. Pastilda will then ask you to enter the master password for your KeePass database, right in the current text box. If the password is entered correctly, Pastilda will decrypt and display your database. You can navigate through it with left, right, up, and down arrows or you can just start to input the name of the entry in your database and Pastilda will display matching variants. Once you find the entry you’re looking for, press Enter and Pastilda will automatically enter the corresponding login and password. If the password is incorrect, Pastilda gives you the option to try again or go back to regular mode by pressing the Esc key on your keyboard.

-----
Features & Specifications
- #Security:
- #Open-source #hardware and #software - you can trust Pastilda

Our own Dr. Roy Schestowitz, along with JoinDiaspora.com is under legal attack from a patent troll who claims to have invented email.

Legal Threats By Charles Harder & Shiva Ayyadurai Targeting More Speech
from the chilling-effects dept

Let's say right upfront: if you are unaware, Shiva Ayyadurai is currently suing Techdirt for our posts concerning Ayyaduria's claims to have invented email. Ayyadurai's lawyer in this matter is Charles Harder, the lawyer who filed multiple lawsuits against Gawker, and is credited by many with forcing that company into bankruptcy and fire sale.

Now Harder, on behalf of Ayyadurai, has sent a demand letter to try to have social media comments posted in response to the lawsuit against us taken down. We are writing about this -- despite the lawsuit against us -- because we believe it is important and we do not intend to have our own speech chilled. This is also why we believe it is so important to have a federal anti-SLAPP law in place, because the chance to chill speech with threats or actual litigation is not a hypothetical problem. It is very, very real.

Harder's letter is to Diaspora, and it demands that certain posts by Roy Schestowitz be removed (which appears to have happened). Schestowitz is the guy behind the Techrights blog, which frequently covers issues related to things like free v. proprietary software and software patents. Harder's letter to Diaspora claims that Schestowitz's posts are defamatory, violate Diaspora's terms of service, and "constitute harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress."

Harder's letter makes the questionable claim that Diaspora itself is liable for Schestowitz's statements. There is tremendous caselaw on Section 230 of the CDA holding that a website cannot be held liable for speech made by users, so it's odd that Harder would argue otherwise, stating that the posts "qualify under the law to establish liability against you."

One of the key reasons Section 230 of the CDA exists is to protect the freedom of expression of users, so that websites aren't pressured via legal threats to take down speech over fear of liability. That's why it grants full immunity. It is surprising that an attorney as established as Harder would overlook this. Elsewhere in the letter, he references Massachusetts law as applying, so it's not as though he's suggesting that some other jurisdiction outside the US applies. So, since Section 230 clearly applies, why would Charles Harder tell Diaspora that it is liable for these statements?

Separately, Harder's letter concludes with the following statement:

This letter and its contents are confidential, protected by copyright law, and not authorized for publication or dissemination.

We have seen similar statements on legal letters in the past and they have generally been considered meaningless, at best. On the question of confidentiality/authorization for publication, that's not how it works. The recipient of such a letter has no obligation to not disseminate it or to ask for authorization without any prior agreement along those lines. You can't magically declare something confidential and ban anyone from sharing it. Furthermore, this is especially true when dealing with legal threat letters. While many lawyers put such language into these letters to try to scare recipients (and avoid a Streisand Effect over the attempt to silence speech), they serve no purpose other than intimidation.

Separately, claims of copyright in takedown or cease & desist letters, while they do show up occasionally, are also generally considered to be overstatements of the law. First off, there are questions raised about whether or not general cease & desist threat letters have enough creativity to get any kind of copyright, but, more importantly, even if there were copyright on such a letter it would be a clear and obvious fair use case to be able to share them and distribute them publicly, as part of an effort to discuss how one has been threatened with questionable legal arguments.

Either way, we believe that this fits a pattern of using legal threats and litigation to silence criticism of public figures. In an era when speaking truth to power is so important, we believe such actions need to be given attention, and need to be called out. We also think they demonstrate why we need much stronger anti-SLAPP laws, at both the state and federal level to protect people's right to speak out about public issues. If you agree, please call your elected representatives and ask them to support strong anti-SLAPP protections, like those found in the SPEAK FREE Act of 2015.

“A schoolboy from Cher has been sentenced to five years in prison by the correctional court in Bourges. Three years with no probation, for terrorism apology via electronic communication and habitual consultation of websites known for terrorism apology. He was not suspected of planning a terrorist attak. The young man was 18 years old and went to school in Vierzon. He has been placed under a committal warrant.” – Le Parisien 24th December 2016

This schoolboy will, therefore, spend at least, three years in prison – it is well known, how a spell in prison can adversely affect any youth – despite the fact he has not committed nor has he planned to commit any violent act. This is not the first sentence of its kind in France. Since the terrorist attacks of January 2015 at Charlie Hebdo and the establishment of the never ending “state of emergency”, the justice system has been viciously targeting individuals, guilty, of nothing more than thoughlessness or mild provocation…often under the influence of alcohol or anger. Or perhaps, they might have consulted internet sites promoting Islamic extremism, without any direct link to any terrorist group or any intention of carrying out a terrorist act.’http://21stcenturywire.com/2017/02/04/france-hollandes-secret-dirty-war-against-freedom-of-speech-while-supporting-terrorism-globally/

2016 was a great year for Open Hardware. The Open Source Hardware Association released their certification program, and late in the year, a few silicon wizards met in Mountain View to show off the latest happenings in the RISC-V instruction set architecture.

The RISC-V ISA is completely unlike any other computer architecture. Nearly every other chip you’ll find out there, from the 8051s in embedded controllers, 6502s found in millions of toys, to AVR, PIC, and whatever Intel is working on are closed-source designs. You cannot study these chips, you cannot manufacture these chips, and if you want to use one of these chips, your list of suppliers is dependent on who has a licensing agreement with who.

We’ve seen a lot of RISC-V stuff in recent months, from OnChip’s Open-V, and now the HiFive 1 from SiFive. The folks at SiFive offered to give me a look at the HiFive 1, so here it is, the first hands-on with the first Open Hardware microcontroller.
