Why we don't publish at the Play Store

We got some requests recently, asking, why we do not publish #dandelion at the #GooglePlay. So here are our main reasons, why we don't plan to uploadthe app there currently.

First of all, we do not comply with Googles terms of service. Having to pay ~25€ to Google who did not write the app and does not respect your freedom nor your privacy on its platforms (Youtube, GMail...) just doesn't feel right. We believe, that our userbase is well aware of the privacy concerns that come with using Google's Services, so many diaspora* users actually get their apps through F-Droid (which is great). Second, if a user that does not know about F-Droid yet wants to use dandelion* and searches for it, they'll hopefully find out about the F-Droid project and may get in touch with free software that way. So by not publishing to Google Play, we hope to get more people to understand, use and appreciate free and open source software.

If you find dandelion* on the Play Store, please be aware, that you likely just found a version built by someone else. We can not guarantee that such a version has not been tampered with in terms of #malware, so we highly discourage you to use it. It should be clear, that we'll never charge you any money for using, downloading, sharing or modifying the app. Note also, that we won't support those versions.

If you want to dontate to the project to support the developers, and keep them motivated, please feel free to contact us :D As always, you can help us by submitting bug reports, code and/or translations on github and crowdin.
PS: We maintainers (@gsantner and @vanitasvitae) will soon have more time again to actively work on the app. The last weeks we were distracted with educational work, so here is some background information:

@gsantner was working on another FLOSS app called Froody, which lets you share (naturally growing) food and other things with others. He hopes to enable people to live a more sustainable life. The main idea is to share to and help other people by e.g. sharing pears, which would rot anyway if unused.Everything is built with international use in mind. The app is available at https://github.com/froodyapp/froody-android, and is currently available in #English, #German and #Japanese. Also translatable on Crowdin. He also writes his bachlor thesis about Open Source and Android, which will be completed in summer and likely to be released in an appropiate free license.

@vanitasvitae is writing his bachelor thesis about an #OMEMO module for #Smack, a #XMPP library used by many free messengers like #Jitsi or #Kontalk.
He hopes to enable those messengers to #encrypt your communication end-to-end using the OMEMO protocol introduced by #conversations.
He'll also attend #FOSDEM in #brussels by the way, so if you are there you might meet him and chat a little ;)

Sharing welcome!

The slides and the video of my talk about #diaspora at the #fosdem2017 are now available on the fosdem website, direct links at the bottom of the page.

I would like to thanks all the diaspora* contributors and users I met during the weekend and @nitot@framasphere.org and the staff of the #decentralized internet devroom to brought this topic at the #fosdem

Of course, everything is under Creative Commons BY so feel free to share, modify, use, redistribute, and give talks about diaspora* all over the world! Sharing is caring, and we need a respectful social network to discuss and improve the world.

We're packing up and heading to #fosdem
See you there!

#fosdem2017

I tried KDE/Wayland. Windows mostly "flickered" (I believe that they constantly shift between two locations) and after waiting for a while for thing to stabilize, the session just crashed.

Anyway, I gave up on GNOME/Wayland for now. Now with Plasma (KDE) at least I get over #FOSDEM.

So like last year we will be at the fosdem at Brussels this weekend!
Come to our stand if you want to talk with us. There will also be a talk about the state of diaspora* and the decentralized social world on Sunday morning at 9:30am.

If you attend the fosdem and want to help represent diaspora* please join the loomio discussion.

We can't wait to meet all of you!

If you're going to #fosdem2017 , consider visiting some events in the Open Source Design devroom.
It's a great initiative that lets designers contribute to FOSS, collaborate with developers and learn something new.
Apart from that, it's a diverse community of wonderful inclusive folks.

MIX Is Coming to Town

Mediated Information eXchange (MIX) is the proposed successor of the well-known Multi-User Chat (MUC). Ralph Meijer, chair of XSF and director of XMPP Council, writes about the not-so-far future of this XMPP extension:
MIX takes the good parts of the Multi User Chat (MUC) protocol, that has been the basis of group chat in XMPP for quite a while, redesigned on top of XMPP Publish-Subscribe. Modern commercial messaging systems, for business use (e.g. Slack and HipChat), as well as for general use (e.g. WhatsApp, WeChat, Google's offerings), have tried various approaches on the ancient model of multi-part text exchange, adding multi-media and other information sources, e.g. using integrations, bots, and cards.

MIX is the community's attempt to provide a building block that goes beyond the tradional approach of a single stream of information (presence and messages) to a collection of orthogonal information streams in the same context. ... All-in-all MIX allows for much richer, multi-modal, and more scalable interactions. ... I expect the discussions at the XMPP Summit to tie the loose ends as a prelude to initial implementations.

I am sure that FOSDEM and the XMPP Summit will have many more exciting topics, so I hope to see you there. Until then, Jabber on!

from mail by @Taziden :

dev room for decentralized internet @ FOSDEM 2017 : Call for Papers

Hi fellow hackers,

Open Source and Free Software initial promises were to empower individuals
when it came to computing. Three decades later, computing is almost always
connected to the Internet one way or another. PCs are less and less used
while smartphones are soaring and data is collected and stored on servers
on which we have very limited control as users. What happened to our
freedom and empowerment in the meantime? The outlook is not so great: we
have less and less control over our digital environment. Network Neutrality is in danger and most code we use is proprietary and
runs on servers we don't have control over.

Fortunately, FOSDEM 2017 will host a "Decentralised Internet" devroom \o/ We invite projects/individual working around these issues/topics to submit proposals according to this schedule:

CFP DEADLINE: 04 December 2016SPEAKERS NOTIFIED: 11 December 2016

All submissions are to be made in Pentabarf : https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM17 When submitting your talk in Pentabarf, make sure to select the "Decentralised Internet" devroom as the Track. Of course, if you already have a user account, please reuse it.

Topics could include all layers of the stack, from network, hardware, OS, platform, apps and services:
  • Community-driven networks, DIY access providers,
  • Self-hosting software and distributions,
  • Software aimed at keeping control over personal data,
  • Community-hosted alternatives to GAFA
If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to fosdem2017@lists.ffdn.org.

See you soon in Brussels!

FOSDEM 2017 - Accepted developer rooms

I see there is a "Decentralized internet" room for the first time, great news! Anyone from #Diaspora, #Friendica, #Hubzilla, #GNUSocial, #Pumpio, #Mediagoblin or other #decentralized social network project peeps planning to submit talks? Doesn't look like the call for proposals is out yet for this room. Will be sure to spend some time in this room in any case.

@MediaGoblin (Christopher) - maybe a good chance to push out #ActivityPub if you're planning to attend this year, hmm?

In Bruxelles for #fosdem! At Delirium cafe this evening, if we manage to get in...

Saint Ada, goddess of programming

During the saturday dinner at #FOSDEM I was chatting with a friend and letting him know that historically programming started as a woman's job, not just with Lady Ada Lovelace, but also the ENIAC Ladies.

During the conversation, I mentioned "programming" (abstract concept), but it was misheard as "Programming" (personification of said abstract concept); according to a number of theology treatises by Sir Terry Pratchett¹ this meant that such personification either started to exist or at least gained self-consciousness in that instant.

In Her graciousness, She let us know² that she wouldn't mind being called Saint Ada, goddess of programming, and that she can be represented carrying a mug of caffeinated beverages, while she would prefear that her other typical expressions aren't emphasized much.

¹ such as Small Gods (1992) and Hogfather (1996).
² we were still eating and drinking our first beer that evening, so we didn't actually hear her, but I'm as sure of this as the average prophet can be³.
³ not very. This never stopped any of them.

Video recording at FOSDEM

Thanks to all the people who worked to record *all* (for some value of all) of the devrooms at #fosdem: they made choosing which talks to attend much easier, and also allowed more time to just chat with other people without worrying about missing stuff.
