Why we don't publish at the Play Store

We got some requests recently, asking, why we do not publish #dandelion at the #GooglePlay. So here are our main reasons, why we don't plan to uploadthe app there currently.

First of all, we do not comply with Googles terms of service. Having to pay ~25€ to Google who did not write the app and does not respect your freedom nor your privacy on its platforms (Youtube, GMail...) just doesn't feel right. We believe, that our userbase is well aware of the privacy concerns that come with using Google's Services, so many diaspora* users actually get their apps through F-Droid (which is great). Second, if a user that does not know about F-Droid yet wants to use dandelion* and searches for it, they'll hopefully find out about the F-Droid project and may get in touch with free software that way. So by not publishing to Google Play, we hope to get more people to understand, use and appreciate free and open source software.

If you find dandelion* on the Play Store, please be aware, that you likely just found a version built by someone else. We can not guarantee that such a version has not been tampered with in terms of #malware, so we highly discourage you to use it. It should be clear, that we'll never charge you any money for using, downloading, sharing or modifying the app. Note also, that we won't support those versions.

If you want to dontate to the project to support the developers, and keep them motivated, please feel free to contact us :D As always, you can help us by submitting bug reports, code and/or translations on github and crowdin.
PS: We maintainers (@gsantner and @vanitasvitae) will soon have more time again to actively work on the app. The last weeks we were distracted with educational work, so here is some background information:

@gsantner was working on another FLOSS app called Froody, which lets you share (naturally growing) food and other things with others. He hopes to enable people to live a more sustainable life. The main idea is to share to and help other people by e.g. sharing pears, which would rot anyway if unused.Everything is built with international use in mind. The app is available at https://github.com/froodyapp/froody-android, and is currently available in #English, #German and #Japanese. Also translatable on Crowdin. He also writes his bachlor thesis about Open Source and Android, which will be completed in summer and likely to be released in an appropiate free license.

@vanitasvitae is writing his bachelor thesis about an #OMEMO module for #Smack, a #XMPP library used by many free messengers like #Jitsi or #Kontalk.
He hopes to enable those messengers to #encrypt your communication end-to-end using the OMEMO protocol introduced by #conversations.
He'll also attend #FOSDEM in #brussels by the way, so if you are there you might meet him and chat a little ;)

Sharing welcome!

Italy referendum result could send shockwaves through EU

THE EU’s days might be numbered with Italy about to vote on a referendum which could send shockwaves across the continent.

Immagine/foto

Analysts believe the outcome of the #ballot on constitutional #reform could have massive #global implications. Ana Thaker, a market economist at PhillipCapital said the #Italian result could be as "significant as #Brexit”.

With many #European leaders already coming under severe pressure from #anti-EU parties ahead of #elections next year the significance of the Italian result is huge.

Defeat for Italian Prime Minister #MatteoRenzi could lead to even deeper social turmoil in countries already struggling with #austerity, #immigration problems and a growing #contempt for #Brussels.

Maria Paola Toschi, global market strategist at JP Morgan Asset Management told CNBC: "The upcoming Italian #referendum this December may create volatility across markets as the year draws to a close."

Ms Toschi said the referendum is widely considered as political test for #Italy and its leader Matteo #Renzi.

She said: "A victory for #Yes could reinforce the empowerment of the current coalition on an ambitious program of reforms.

"A victory of #No could open a period of uncertainty on the political stability of the current coalition that has been always strongly committed on reforms."

Mr Renzi has vowed to resign and abandon politics if the constitutional reforms were not passed and opponents appear to have seized on what they see as an #opportunity to oust him and press ahead with their own populist #anti-EU agendas.

@ IMAL BXL : Blockchain. Fact. Fiction. Future

4 & 5 November 2016 Symposium, Showcase & Hacklab

[EN]Blockchain is the revolutionary technology that underlies cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Its potential uses extend far beyond its initial purpose, turning upside-down numerous fields, from economics to creative industries or politics. This event brings together artists, activists, hackers, designers and scientists to question and discuss the disruptive, cultural and creative potential of this technology.

PROGRAMME

SYMPOSIUM (04/11, 14:00-18:00) A unique panel of international experts. With: Michel Bauwens (P2P Foundation), Jaromil, Yves Moreau (KU Leuven), Chris Speed (University of Edinburgh), Jelle Gerbrandy (Backfeed), Nicolas Loubet (Cellabz), Max Dovey, Enric Duran (FairCoop)

SHOWCASE (04/11, 20:00 – 22:00) An exhibition of projects that challenge or take advantage of the blockchain technology. With: Thomas König (Faircoin), Jaromil (D-CENT), David Guez, LarbitsSisters (LARbitsLAB), Max Dovey, Rieul Techer (Paillasse Saône), Xavier Lavayssière (Les Bricodeurs)

REM: I’ll consider making a pirate intervention there if possible during the symposium to raise some points, as this IMAL is actually a centralising and castrating institution for digital arts for years, that even claims it loud and clear to be THE Center of digital art in Brussels, crushing and impeaching all other french speaking initiative that does not serve it’s master mind that has it’s own “friends” and “servants”, it has infiltrated political circles and art commissions to impose it’s own view, segregating all other creators and thinkers that does not let themselve dominated or recuperated by him/it … what an irony to invite people like Jaromil or Michel Bauwens to talk about P2P in that temple of centralisation ! To note : nothing about the #RTM and free/libre money neither … the so-called expert is always behind the real advances in the fields, but always mock those that have new ideas as “idealists” until it shows mainstream… (special dedicace to olivierauber@framasphere.org f.ex.) and keeps artists poor with its attitude (beside showing a lot of BS IMHO…) !

working on a #raspberrypi project for an artist in residency in Halles de Schaerbeek, as #embeded video players with projectors and a physical shutter with a servo motor on GPIO (to blaken the space when not showing images)...
I just lost some long hours figure out why my #python #OSC server was not getting datas... (went to even netcat the trafic that was incoming... was all good... ) to remember that I just don't have to specify the adress to listen to in the server def, or it restrict the inbound connection to that adress (of course) ! ... now it's working :D

some usefull ressources : for OSC in python, these 2 libs work, but pyOSC is easier to understand (IMHO) https://github.com/ptone/pyosc https://github.com/attwad/python-osc for GPIO : the classical
https://pypi.python.org/pypi/RPi.GPIO/ to play video I use the omxplayer, and control it by dbus with pydbus https://github.com/LEW21/pydbus So yes, it's all without any X11 installed, and works on the framebuffer directly, based on a minimal Raspbian install I went also to try gstreamer, but I could'nt find a way to display video on the framebuffer directly on the RPi...

at start, the work looks "easy" (as in "I already seen things like this on the internetz done by random kids") but when you start to try to connect it all, you quickly get lost between all the old info and not-so-well-documented libs, with most of them scattered on github...
#floss is sometimes a big mess ... ;)
