Ooh, Hummingbird is a new one to me. I'd wondered how to support my bookstores, since I like going to events there (modulo pandemic), but mostly can't read the print in paper books.
I wish the libro.fm Android app were better . . . Chirp's is pretty decent.

do you have a good workflow for loading these kinds of things into an e-ink device? I'm thinking of getting a Kobo and some way to automate feeds and funnel them onto a device wirelessly would remove Amazon's remaining advantages
A kobo should¹ be seen by the computer as a storage device with a Books directory: every .epub you put in there is seen by the kobo, and you can have a level (I think) of subdirectories to organize things.
I've never bothered with Calibre and I don't know how much automation it already has, but if you want to build your own the kobo itself shouldn't be an obstacle.
Disclaimer: I've only ever loaded DRM-free ebooks on it.
¹ it does on linux, I have no experience with other OSes
yep, Kobo shows up like a USB flash drive on every OS; it's just files. Something like Calibre provides a host of automation tools that allow you to easily set up syncing and have a book-aware interface to managing the device library
Interestingly, it can handle your existing Kindle too; it'll convert books to DRM-Free .mobi format, which the Kindle can read
. Kindles also show up as just flash drives and you can load .mobi files on them directly! You don't have to use Amazon's ecosystem. The catch is .mobi is not as popular as something like .epub, so you'll often need to convert (which Calibre does well)
You didn't mention physical readers. Do you have any that you like? I've been using a Kobo for a few years and would love to get some new tech developments there.
