Some very basic questions about the interface

!Friendica Support

Hi everyone,
I am completely new to Friendica, and I'm just starting to find my way around here. My questions have probably been asked and answered before, but I couldn't find a way to search within the support forum. Using the general search field in the top navigation bar didn't result in anything sensible. So here goes:

1)Β Is there a comprehensive "readme" to be found somewhere, so that we newbies wouldn't have to flood the support forum with these extremely basic questions?
2) How does one search for people on a mobile phone? Using Friendica on my computer I have found the icon that gets me to the "find people" field (see attached screenshot), but on my phone there is no similar icon in the top navigation bar. (By computer I mean Mac OS + Firefox, by phone Android + Firefox.)

3) Similarly, I couldn't find a way to add a profile pic using my phone (neither could a friend of mine). Is this a bug or a feature?

I hope you can bear with my ignorance, looking forward to diving deeper into Friendica πŸ€“

@Antti Tuomikoski I think you can add an @ sign in front of the search term to find people.. @Anne for example . and ! to find groups, like !friendica

@Antti Tuomikoski on /settings/profile should be a link to upload a profile picture. in the top-right corner

Yes, this works (quite intuitively) when I browse the site with Firefox/Mac OS. However, on my Android phone, similarly using Firefox, I can't seem to find the link there. The fields in the menu are as follows:

Display name, description, birthday, location details, homepage URL, XMPP (Jabber) address, public keywords, private keywords, and custom profile fields.

Nothing about profile pics 🀷

@Antti Tuomikoski @xy..
three dots menu on top, "Profile", "Edit profile", "Profile Actions", "Change Profile Photo" (choose an already uploaded photo) or "Upload Profile Photo" (upload a new profile photo)

Friendica Support reshared this.

@Fabio

Thanks! The "profile actions" menu was the key here, didn't realize there were more options behind it as I was just looking at the list that opens when you click "edit profile".

Hey @Antti Tuomikoski welcome to Friendica :)

1.) There is a Quick Start guide on every Friendica node in the help pages, see e.g. friendica.world/help/Quick-Sta…

2.) If you have the handle of an account you can search for @name@example.com. The find people widget is part of your contacts. On the mobile, the link might be hidden behind the hamburger menu.

3.) On your profile page, there is a link to "edit the profile" when you are logged in. There at the top of the page is a "profile actions" link and hidden there is the link to "change profile picture". Well hidden, I admit - had to search myself.

Thanks! And yes, the profile pic thing is quote well hidden πŸ˜…

Being forces to dabble with Adobe products at work, that reminds me of their habit of placing related settings behind a number of different settings menus all around the user interface. But not anywhere near as bad as Adobe 😁

I had to upload my photo to my "photos" section before I could use it as a profile. On your own profile page, there is a little blue v below the search bar and this is for quick tips. These are helpful but don't answer all the questions. I am also new and I have been going to Google and asking questions and then finding answers. The people here in Friendica support (the group) seem to be very helpful. Everyone is a volunteer, so I think that there's a lot that isn't obvious/simple and that requires asking questions which then take a while before they are answered. Not sure if this helped at all, but you are not alone :-)

@Linda Teslik Spot on πŸ‘ Hope it has the chance to grow and develop 🀞

Having no coding skills to speak of I can't personally be of much help running the place, but appreciate everyone who does πŸ™

in reply to Antti Tuomikoski

I also have no coding skills and minimal computer skills :-). Not a problem :-)
in reply to Antti Tuomikoski

@Antti Tuomikoski every single problem we could solve is hopefully a solved problem for 100 persons out there who did not dare to ask.

Honestly - thank you for raising those issues!
