Using #Pinephone #Mobian as a main phone Day 1

First hurdle: for the life of me I can't import my contacts. I have a Nextcloud instance, so I installed the Contacts app and imported my old phone's contacts.

In GNOME's parameters, I set up my Nextcloud account as an external account. I can even access it in Portfolio, the file manager.

But GNOME Contacts is still obstinately empty. And of course, no option to import contacts from a file. 🙄

So I've got my contacts imported, too late in the evening to test sms. Can't wait for tomorrow.

Tweaks done today:

IIRC in dealing with the same Contacts Sync problem on the Librem 5 with pureOS, libevolution is enough to get sync to work. If that's the case (sadly I don't have the time to confirm it right now on @mobian), it really ought to be preinstalled.

I ended up setting up my calendar/contacts/tasks in Evolution. Since it doesn't support smaller screens, I had to use SSH X11 forwarding to configure everything.

evolution actually works decently on the screen when scale-to-fit is turned on...

I don't even like Evolution on the desktop all that much. Actually, I hate it. 😜

It did serve its purpose here. I plan on trying to set up Geary for emails.

syncevolution or however it is called, is unfortunately dropped from current debian testing, so what worked on the L5 in "amber" will not work in "byzantium" (or mobian)...

It would be crazy that Purism's phone cannot import Nextcloud contacts on a vanilla install ?! Aren't they offering cloud services based on the same Nextcloud ??

Well, I was sitting there and facepalming, but Mobian has the problem too ... Guess it's something with gnome-online-accounts not having all the dependencies to properly work for everything Nextcloud in upstream Debian.

May I say this dropping of a seemingly important library appears to be a... Byzantine decision? 😜

Ah well. Things are bound to break sometimes. I don't have that many contacts. I can live with having to import contacts manually.

Brain fart on my part. I thought bysantium was the name of the next Debian version, I totally forgot names are taken from Toy Story characters.

If you configure Nextcoud as an online contact, you should have a switch to sync contacts (just below calendar) which should make the contacts available. Importing contacts locally works best with evolution....

configure Nextcloud as an online contact? I'm confused. In Gnome Contacts you mean? As a single contact? 🤔

no. Settings->Online Accounts->Add an account->Nextcloud

Configure the account, enable contacts and voilá they should pop up in your contacts app and be synchronized..,

I think the Nextcloud configuration dialog is only partially visible on the screen, but the switches can still be reached...

that's what I had already did, and no, contacts didn't pop up automagically. Anyway, I imported my contacts manually from a vcf file using Evolution, as explained in the wiki. I deleted my Nextcloud account from Gnome's online accounts. From what's been mentioned in this thread, it's no longer working anyway?

Nextcloud works as a Gnome Online Account. Just the tool "syncevolution" was dropped, but that is unrelated. If Nextcloud contacts don't sync that is a bug.

GOA works for me to sync contacts with nextcloud.. mostly.. some contacts that are in nextcould don't show up in Contacts. It's the same on Arch on my laptop, same contacts don't show up, but I never took my time to investigate...

Uhh, ohh, missing contacts is ... surprising. Would be nice to isolate on of those accounts to find out why it does not sync...
