Eccoci dopo il #SabatoAScuola all'Istituto Sant'Elia di Cantù.
Le altre foto sono nell'album.
Un gran numero di studenti hanno deciso di saltare le lezioni e passare la mattina ascoltando le nostre presentazioni: l'auditorium era pieno.
Grande successo ha riscosso la "tastiera a frutta" di Jacopo, che si vede nella foto qui sopra.
A fine evento chi aveva domande o curiosità si è avvicinato al tavolo, qualcuno già con idee interessanti per progetti da realizzare con arduino.

E' stata un'esperienza interessante che speriamo di ripetere in altre scuole.

Sabato 11 Aprile: incontro presso FaberLab
Sabato 11 aprile dalle 14 alle 20 il LIFO si incontrerà presso FaberLab di Tradate per un pomeriggio a tema libero.
Argomenti che di sicuro verranno trattati comprendono progetti basati su Arduino e schede simili e la prosecuzione dei collegamenti dell'isola lombarda di Ninux.
Leap second on 31 march
A couple of days ago this appeared in my system logs
Mar 31 23:59:59 kernel: Clock: inserting leap second 23:59:60 UTCmy first reaction of course was "great! they gave us one second more of sleep! MY PRECIOUSSSS", but then I realized that yes, this year there was supposed to be a leap second, but it should have been in June, not in March.
Other people I know noticed the message, but nobody knew anything else about it, and duckduckgoing didn't find anything, so I'm asking the lazyweb: does anybody know what happened?
Update: it seems that this has been traced to a single layer1 ntp server.

Anche quest'anno si terrà la DUCC-IT, Debian Ubuntu Community Conference Italia: quarta edizione che si terrà a Milano Lambrate sabato 23 e domenica 24 maggio presso il TIM WCAP Accelerator di via Rombon 52.
È aperta la call for paper e chi vuole aiutare nell'organizzazione è il benvenuto, ma soprattutto partecipate: è un'ottima occasione per incontrare un po' tutto il mondo del Software Libero in Italia.

Serata di introduzione al Software Libero presso i radioamatori
Questa sera ci troviamo presso la sede ARI (Largo Gigli 1) di Varese per tenere una serata sul software (e hardware) libero.
Sarà il primo di una serie di incontri dedicati al "baratto" di conoscenze tra noi informatici e radioamatori.
Problemi con la mailing list
Ci siamo accorti che in questi giorni ci sono stati un po' di problemi con la mailing list, non tutti stanno ricevendo i messaggi, anche se partono e almeno qualcuno risulta sull'archvio, ma non su gmane.
La riunione di stasera è comunque confermata: come al solito cena alle 20:00 da Bilen e a seguito riunione con tema Arduino, come da mail di annuncio del presidente sparita e solo parzialmente recuperata.
Free Software - We Have the Capacity
When discussing the principles of Free Software, it is all too easy to make the mistake of emphasising one interpretation of Free Software idealism over another. You can frame it two unique ways: "Microsoft is bad" vs "Free Software is great."One way of interpreting Free Software is in its inherent denouncement of proprietary code and the collective communities attitudes towards proprietary vendors such as Microsoft, Apple, and Adobe. "Proprietary software is bad, and so are the companies that make it," it could be said.

But there's a far greater message to be had, and I think it needs to be emphasized to the fullest.
"We have the capacity."
It's easy to focus on the negativity of an opposing ideal first. If nothing, the Free Software community is a fairly passionate one, and although internally it doesn't always agree on everything, overall it's a welcoming enough space that can encourage new people to become a part of it. A good experience of making things together is kind of what keeps a community going. This includes making decisions and assisting newcomers.
I think a better mindset for Free Software is "we have the capacity" because it focuses on all of the things one can do with it, rather than all of the things its opponents cannot do. It is an important distinction because it is foundational to the very tone and tenor of what Free Software is actually about: having the capacity to make things however you want to; you can study new ideas from existing code, and use that to learn how to do something new.
There are communities filled with volunteers that code together because they love it and care about their projects enough to keep working on them. There is code that can be used for free that anyone can install. You can make 3D printers, robots, desktop and web applications. You can use tools to build other tools, and make programs that create other things, such as art, music, and films.
In the end, Free Software is not just about being an alternative to the status quo. It is about giving empowerment to people, and levelling the economic playing field by offering every bit of it for free. By providing the tools and the knowledge to a person, you can give them the power to help themselves.

Ottima spiegazione di quando è il caso di usare rebase e quando no.
Stampante 3D
Abbiamo deciso di cimentarci nella realizzazione di una stampante 3D da mettere a disposizione dei nostri tesserati.
L’idea e’ quella di sfruttare gli infiniti esempi di progetti open, migliorarne uno e dare la possibilita’ a tutti di prender parte agli aspetti decisionali del progetto.
Vorremmo progettare assieme un sistema che sia semplice, ottimizzato per la stampa e che permetta di migliorare i kit-open presenti in rete.

Reducing useless noise from irssi
Yesterday I missed a query from a friend (with the answer to a question *I* had asked in the first place) because it ended up in window 30-something and my statusbar was full of dim numbers from channels where people had just joined/left.
This morning I've setactivity_hide_level = JOINS PARTS QUITS
and my world is a much neater place :)
(I may have to add NICKS and possibly MODES, but they are rare enough and I'm still not sure I don't care about them, especially the latter.)

Questo significa che da quella data gli utenti non riceveranno più nuove funzionalità ma sopratutto aggiornamenti di sicurezza. Vi ricordate di quando il vostro PC con Windows si riavviava a caso grazie a un worm che sfruttava un baco di XP? E vi ricordate come la cosa si è sistemata dopo aver installato gli aggiornamenti? Dal nove aprile questo non succederà più (gli aggiornamenti, non i bachi). Certo, potete anche continuare a usare XP, ma è meglio se lo lasciate scollegato dal mondo: niente rete, niente wifi, niente chiavette USB…

Everywhere (and for "everywhere" I mean "on hacker news") I read news about the new Mozilla CEO, how he is evil, how bad he is and everything he touch, because once he spent his money to support California’s Proposition 8 (a ballot initiative against same-sex mariages) some years ago.

And more and more I'm reading posts about "how I switched to chrome because of new Mozilla CEO".
