Torture doesn't work

It's a depressing fact, but many if not most people still believe that #torture actually works; they believe that torture is an effective way of extracting information from an uncooperative subject. The #science has been in on the subject since as far back as it's been called science, but the belief persists. Most people will agree that it is unethical, though many will still allow for it in "extreme situations", but even those that say it shouldn't be done still harbour the belief that it works.

But torture doesn't work. The science is crystal clear on the matter. In fact, torture is not only unlikely to get you any good information, it actually damages the subject so much that it harms your chances of getting information from them in the future - even when you start using actually effective interrogation tactics (and they do exist). So even aside from the #ethics (which, really, shouldn't be ignored), torture is a bad idea.

An orthodontic appliance realigning teeths in timelapse. By applying an external force on the tooth, it is slowly and progressively shifted in the direction of the received force, and the tissues will reshape. In the area receiving the pressure, the osteoclasts induces the bone resorption, while in the space from which the tooth is moved, new bone tissue is created.

* Humanity must work together to solve the problems we face on a global scale.

* No single entity, government, company, or organization can solely achieve this.

* All entities must willingly combine forces, skills, abilities, influences, communications, and connections in order to achieve this.

* Open Access needs to be granted to knowledge, research, and discoveries.

* Censorship of any kind will only inhibit humanity's ability to work together.

Description

Throughout history, there has been a battle between those who wish to control information, and those who wish to set it free. Looking past profit and greed, there is a reasonable mentality for supporting the control of information. Humans can not always work for free, they require food, water, shelter and other essentials for survival. In order to continue quality of work, these needs must be met.

However, the money is not always reaching those who make the discoveries, and these are the people who work the hardest. This must change.

Intellectual Property is a misnomer, no single entity owns their intellect. One builds knowledge on the shoulders of others. While it is true that one deserves credit for their work, the act of disabling others to share this work is an injustice to humanity, and renders the work as useless.

A solution to this problem is more important than any other.

Without knowledge, education, and the ability to access it: Humans will not be able to make informed decisions, and will not be able to solve other complex problem they face. Until this problem is solved, humanity will continue to shuffle their feet slowly toward solutions, and when the day come that Earth is in mortal peril, Earth's population might not be ready to act.

New research describes how bacteria resists 'last-resort' antibiotic

An international research team, led by the University of Bristol, has provided the first clues to understand how the mcr-1 gene protects bacteria from colistin - a 'last resort' antibiotic used to treat life-threatening bacterial infections that do not respond to other treatment options.

Many of the leading scientists working on climate change research around the country have found themselves targeted by David Schnare, an attorney working for a coal-industry-backed nonprofit. In recent years, Schnare has hounded academics with lawsuits and voluminous record requests as part of a campaign the Union of Concerned Scientists has called “harassment” designed to “chill their speech, and discourage them from tackling contentious topics.”

Now, Schnare is working for Donald Trump.

Countless periodic table posters are now obsolete

Meet the newest elements: #nihonium (Nh), #moscovium (Mc), #tennessine (Ts) and #oganesson (Og). On November 28, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry gave their seal of approval to the names proposed for the four elements, which take slots 113, 115, 117 and 118 on the periodic table.

The new names, proposed in June, underwent five months of public comment and review. #IUPAC decided to let the names stand, and unwieldy placeholder names — #ununtrium, #ununpentium, #ununseptium and #ununoctium — assigned when the #elements were added to the #periodic-table in December 2015, can now be scrubbed.

Three of the elements were named for the places they were discovered. The name of #element 113, “nihonium,” comes from the word “Nihon,” a Japanese word for the country of #Japan. Element 115 is dubbed “moscovium,” after #Moscow. And element 117, tennessine, is named after #Tennessee. Element 118, oganesson, honors physicist Yuri #Oganessian.
