Does anyone have experience teaching Linux to an 11 year old? I've been using Linux for over a decade but I am a terrible teacher when it comes to computing (I get way too frustrated when people don't know what I'm talking about). If you have any advice or links on the topic, it would be very much appreciated.

Earlier this month the "Too Much, Too Soon" campaign made headlines with a letter calling for a change to the start age for formal learning in schools. Here, one of the signatories, Cambridge researcher David Whitebread, from the Faculty of Education, explains why children may need more time to develop before their formal education begins in earnest.

Did #Media Literacy Backfire?

Now think about what this means for #Pizzagate. Across this country, major news outlets went to great effort to challenge conspiracy reports that linked John #Podesta and Hillary Clinton to a child trafficking ring supposedly run out of a pizza shop in Washington, DC. Most people never heard the conspiracy stories, but their ears perked up when the mainstream press went nuts trying to debunk these stories. For many people who distrust “liberal” media and were already primed not to trust #Clinton, the abundant reporting suggested that there was something to investigate.

Most people who showed up to the Comet Ping Pong pizzeria to see for their own eyes went undetected. But then a guy with a gun decided he “wanted to do some good” and “rescue the children.” He was the first to admit that “the intel wasn’t 100%,” but what he was doing was something that we’ve taught people to do — question the information they’re receiving and find out the #truth for themselves.

White philosophy

It seems amusing that philosophers such as Kant should be considered "white": since when was fundamental thought restricted to Europeans? However, similar to the "fallists" in South Africa (see: https://diasp.eu/posts/4771213), do these "snowflake" students have a legitimate claim to their complaint? Why is west Asia referred to as "middle east", especially in consideration of the chosen reference point? Can anyone mention a philosopher of African or Asian origin? If not, why not?

Food Sovereignty In Rebellion: Decolonization, Autonomy, Gender Equity, And The Zapatista Solution

When viewed in its geopolitical context, the #Zapatista #insurgency has opened up space for a wide range of alternative ways of re-organizing societies, #economies, and food systems. Consequently, what the Zapatistas prove through their #resistance (i.e., efforts in #autonomous #education, #decolonization, and #gender equity) is that a recognition of #Indigenous people’s right to #self-determination, in conjunction with #anti-capitalist #collective work and movements toward food #sovereignty, can indeed provide viable alternatives to the world’s #neoliberal food regime as well as revolutionize the #struggle for food security.

End of the rainbow

In October 2015, thousands of South African students took to the streets, bringing their country to a virtual standstill. Mobilising under two interlinked movements – #RhodesMustFall (RMF) and #FeesMustFall (FMF) – the students organised a campaign that shut down the nation’s twenty-six universities. They were protesting an 11.5 per cent tuition hike that was to be introduced for the 2016 academic year. Just weeks after their protests began, the students had won: President Jacob Zuma announced there would be no fee increase.

Facebook education software spurs privacy fears
Summit Basecamp, built with the help of Facebook engineers, was billed as a powerful tool that could reshape how students learn. Dozens of schools nationwide have signed up to use the program, which tailors lessons to individual students using software that tracks their progress.

But it also captures a stream of data, and Bilicki had to sign a consent form for her children to participate, allowing their personal data to be shared with companies such as Facebook and Google. That data, the form said, could include names, email addresses, schoolwork, grades and Internet activity.
